Does anyone know if it's possible to change the display below the compas/rudder angle dial in the main console? I would much prefer to know what my course is instead of how far my rudder is turned

Hi!
I'm guessing he's talking about the numeric display just below the rudder annunciator/compass dial. The number always reflects the current rudder offset - never the exact course. I don't know if there's a way to change it. I suspect there isn't one without changing the underlying code. Pablo |

Hi Observer, I think the problem lies with the compass being so small and the exact course is undecipherable. Using full manual targeting you need the exact course for the calculations. Right now I need to go to a view like uzo or periscope, hit the - key to zero it then hit the= key and the nav reads out the course. I don't know another quicker way to get the exact course. It would be nice if the small readout below the compass dial actually displayed the current course instead of rudder degrees.

I find the easiest way to manual target is to: 1. Take bearing and range #1, mark on nav plot with "X" and start stopwatch. 2. After 3 min 15 sec, take bearing and range #2, and mark on nav plot with an "X". Draw a line between X1 and X2. You now know targets course. 3. Use the compass tool to measure the distance between points. The distance is the targets speed in knots. You know now target speed. 4. Make sure the line you drew in step 2 extends far enough and draw a line from ownship position through 0 degrees relative and intersecting the target course. 5. Use the angle tool to measure the angle. Set your periscope on 0 degrees relative and enter the angle you measured in step 4 using port or starboard as appropriate. Enter into TDC and clear the scratchpad. 6. Update target range as necessary and when target enters position, shoot. Piece of cake and virtually error proof unless the target zigs. Even if they do, measure the time between zigs and you can easily nail them. Every time. You don't have to know ownships course because it's updated for you if you use a relative bearing compass. |

To get course information ask your navigator. Slave a key command to the request (I use 'v') and every time you hit it he will call out your course.

The idea behind my wanting this, is due to the tiny display of the compass coupled with the fact that rudder angle is somewhat less important than headding (IMHO). I will grab this slideout compass and give it a try, but the whole reason for having a display you can reference by just looking down seems to me less time consuming and distracting.
As for the Nav officer command... I am not clear what you are referring to. There is no command that issues a report on headding by any officer that I know of. Is this new? I would prefer this, in fact, as I like interacting with my officers ![]() |
