There are some interesting stories around submarine tactics here:
http://members.aol.com/odevlin/coldwar.html I like the one about the USS Gudgeon!

If you're interested in the Cold War era, get hold of a book called 'Blind Man's Bluff' by Sherry Sontag and a couple of other authors. It's an account of some of the UK/US ops in the post-war years.

The first story involving the USS Tautog gives the impression that the Soviet sub sank. I believe 60 Minutes had a segment with the captain of K108 where he held up a piece of the Tautog's sail that was imbedded near the starboard propeller shaft. Also, back around 5 years ago (during the aftermath of the K141 Kursk tragedy) the New York Times reported that K108 did make it back to port with heavy damage.
