Default A question that needs answering. StarForce?

As someone who played Red Baron One and STILL plays Red Baron 3D years after the dissolution of Sierra Dynamix (extensively modded of course.) I have a situational question:

Ten years from now you want to load up SH3 on your brand new hard drive. Theoretically this should be no problem, however installation requires internet registration and UBISOFT has gone away.

Will you be able to install it, patch it, and play it, WITHOUT using anything but your legally purchased disk which includes StarForce? I am NOT asking about cracks.

I would really like to know. Once I decide I like something I stay with it.

Herr Lehmann,

I previously showed my frustration with the overall situation (a lack of SDK and an apparent non interest in the original game's future (by the manufacturer and seemingly, others) and was - I will be polite here 'shot down'...

I am not sure what the 'time-out' of the protection program is, so there may very well be a limitation on game play after a specific date?

You may want to pose this same question in the MOD's Forum or on UBISOFT's website as I do believe their may be a more knowledgeable response!

StarFarce, could/fer you some assistance in this matter, based upon the licence agreement with UBISOFT but from what I read elsewhere, they are usually not too communicative with end-users!

Good luck!

The answer is yes. Definitely. But I think you are indeed asking about cracks.

You may want to reserach the topic of "abandonware" -- google is a good place to start. One of my wife's friends is a big proponent of abandonware, and he could tell you the legal ins-and-outs of the system.

Personally, I choose not to use abandonware, as I believe that there is a large legal issue that remains unresolved. By the time SHIII becomes abandoned, though, there could be legal bulkheads in place to guide you in your search for gaming solutions. If I were you, I wouln't worry much about it until then.

Do NOT put words in my mouth! You do not know me and you do NOT know how I live my life.

I PAID for my copy of SH3 and expect it to function until I decide to get rid of it.... WITHOUT HAVING TO STOOP TO THE DISHONESTY OF USING A CRACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You speak of "trolls" and "ad-hominem attacks" stating that I am in fact "asking about cracks" is trolling, antagonistic, and arrogant of you.

It is an accusation without basis other than your perception and what you "think."

I hear what you are saying my friend. The problem is that I am hoping that in truth the actual answer is that I will never have to worry about it... because a legally purchased copy of a game should be good forever. (IMHO)

I just want to know if Starforce will prevent me from using my game if and when Ubisoft is no more.

I will try the venue you suggest.

Cheers mate.

Guys, I did not start this topic to open some old wound or to solicit some "work-around" to legal issues.

(That's not a poke at you Twelvefield. I really feel that you were trying to help.)

If you have to kick someone... start your own thread.

I only want to know if I can legally play this game when I'm a few years down the road and my reflexes are too slow for flight sims.

Blimey! Calm yourself. I wasn't accusing you of anything. I was saying that the only truthful answer you'll get is 'Yes, with a crack'. Given your scenario, that's the only answer.

Jeez! I think some folks need to take a valium.

The guys says he is NOT asking about cracks.

However here on Subsim we are lucky to have members who have the ability to read minds or THINK they know what people are thinking.

Did you miss the first part of my last post? My point was that although he wasn't asking about cracks, the only answer he's likely to get will involve cracks, because given the restrictions of his question, the only possible answer is 'yes, with a crack.' Thus, in effect, his restrictions force an answer that involves a crack. Any other answer would be false. In framing the question, he only allowed us to respond in one way. Thus, even if he didn't know it, he's asking about cracks.

I'm not sure why I have to spell these things out. Anyway, my response was tongue-in-cheek. I don't see why we should all be expected to take things super seriously. I didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition.

I think some of the folks on these forums lately are way too stressed out. Maybe it's all those hours spent playing a U-boat game - I think all that simulated tension is overflowing into the real world.

Ok...Ok... I really think some people may have misunderstood Beery's reply. It is possible that he may be right... long into the future.

So lets calm down and get back out on patrol.

Oh, and Beery.... NOBODY EXPECTS THE SPANISH INQUISITION!

After the Spanish Inquistion had left, Beery was summoned before the moderators.

"So what exactly did you mean Beery?"

I certainly hope there will be a way to play many years from now, though I think Beery may be spot on here.
Unless they would be kind enough to 'abandon' it to whom ever wants it, or Starfarce releases their own tool to remove itself in the future - though I suppose that would be a 'crack' anyway

I just have to make one thing clear , there is nothing wrong with using a crack. Nothing dishonest, nothing bad, your not going to go to jail, or get wracked by the mafia etc., etc.,

Bad cd = Crack = No stress
