Today I found a couple of really good sites with pics and information about the Patapsco Class Tanker (which is what the Small Tanker actually is). Some of the schemes there would look great in an update to your late-war merchant skin mod, if you ever decided to release one:

Thanks for the tip. I'm planning on updating the MVP after I manage to obtain more research material, so maybe these skins will appear then.
