Default Wind

Is it in fact the case that wind doesn't affect any particles in the game? I've been looking for a while now and haven't noticed it. This looks bad in a storm where you sink ships for example.

In fact wind had a large influence on how smoke dissipated, eg:

What makes it rather more of a shame is that there seems to be at least two wind variables in EnvSim.act that refer to particles - referring to global and local windspeed. More stuff devs planned but didn't implement?

Anyone done any tests?

one thing regarding wind i have noticed that does seem to have an impact---and i'm not sure if this is a genuine in game effect of some form of glitch to be honest--

is the effect it has on your ability to maintain a straight heading when travelling cross wind--keep an eye on your rudder indicator whilst traveling along a plotted course--more often than not you see it is set at 3 degrees port or similar instead of 0 degrees (alarmingly i saw it go right up to full opposite rudder -40 degrees- during a storm once--and i was still travelling on a dead straight plotted course) which obviuosly would have you going round in a slow circle rather than travelling along a straight course--

i thought there was summat wrong with the game but when the weather changed to calm it returned to 0 degrees-- :hmm:

only thing that makes any sense at all (other than a glitch) is that the wind speed and direction affects the waves or some such effect forcing the game to compensate with a small amount of opposite rudder--

as you say tho haven't seen any effect on smoke etc on a stationary ship-

It does have an effect on your speed and bearing. In a storm, steering into the wind will slow you down, and I think that if you're broadside to the wind your boat will lean more in the wind direction. Neat touches.

And of course the clouds move according to wind speed and direction. I'm not sure if waves do though - they seem to change shape and form semi-randomly?

In reality waves should travel in the wind direction except in extreme conditions.

I wonder if that 3 degrees rudder affects shooting solutions?

It effects the sea state too, put your wind speed at 6 and the crew will be in fine weather gear with a fairly calm-ish sea, set it to 7 or above and they will be in storm gear and the waves look more realistic.

Ooops! Sorry CB, I just saw where you referred to the waves.

it might explain some of those absolutely inexplicable misses you sometimes get--you know the one's--less than 2000 metres away- full spread of torpedos -spread angle to less than one degree-correct depth setting for the target-- all of them miss!!!

dunno?--but it does happen every now and then--

i wonder if storm conditions can actually blow a convoy of course?
COL?? you seen anything like that? :hmm:

Hi CB,

Well I've certainly had a lot of torpedo misses which I (think) had something to do with the waves.
I've not see a convoy blown off course (yet), but then again I've not been in too rough a storm, I must give it a try.

i was mystified by just the one occasion during a severe storm where i traveled all the way from the Bay of Biscuits up to the AL grids with full left rudder pernamently on---kept wondering what on earth would happen if i went to manual navigation and tried to turn left lol---
