Default To many keel break-ups?

I was wondering, weren't midship keel break-up's a rare occurrence in real life? I believe that most sinkings was simply a matter of blasting a hole(s) -> ship lists to one side/port/stern -> takes on more water -> capsizes or sinks upright.

I have seen ships sink in the upright position but almost never capsise (wich in spectaculair to watch, especially when the ship has trucks/tanks or planes onboard.

Any thoughts on this?

I tottaly agree with you..the keel breaks are much to easy and frequent.

Though you will hear people go on about "only use impact" settings to stop the breaks.Well in the tests I have done this does not help.Even with the impact setting used the ship may not break on the hit but will usually catch fire and then the explosion will break the ships keel.Id say in my games a good 90% of the ships I sink break in two either from the torpedo hit or from the explosions of the ship after it catches fire.

I rarely ever see a ship simply take on water and capsize and sink.

Is it possible to mod the strength of the keel to maybe not break as easily but still be breakable with the proper hit?

I noticed this also when I had the realistic sinking time setting checked. Not sure why, but once I removed that setting I started getting a lot more variety in the way ships sink. A little off topic, but try using the deck gun with armor piercing ammo. Aim just below the waterline of the ship and start pounding away. If you do it along the length of the ship you should be able to produce some good capsizing scenes. At any rate, it's fun to watch the ship start to list after a while in the direction of where it's taken the hits.

They will break from explosion when loaded with ammunition of fuel, not with cargo. I like ships breaking up, but I think it's the BIG ships that deserve to be breaking up as well, especially when sinking bow/stern down (think big, think titanic). And very often they do break up in real life under water yoo.

If you have a hex editor, try opening the torpedo.zon file. You should see some values for the maximum radius of damage that a torpedo can inflict. If you reduce this, maybe torpedoes that don't impact the keel will be less likely to make ships split in half.

maybe, but c2s will take even more hits and keep on ticking.

It would be nice if we could see metal deforming from ductile fractures, such as the ones that occurred when the Titanic split in half. The current breakup graphics are a bit primitive. I've seen games from the early 1990's that had some very advanced metal deformation for cars that had collisions, etc. I guess the developers had too many other things to worry about...
