Default IS MY PETTY OFFICER OF THE WATCH BLIND?

Right. From my log:

24.X.39 1053 at 158-008/AN61: 0913 ship spotted, bearing 078, 4500 m, coming closer fast. Crash dived. A small british freighter, making 8 - 10 knots, zig-zagig (she have to see us, because distance was so small when we dived). Couldn't attack because lack of torpedos. Surfaced 1050 after contact with the enemy was lost. Watch crew spotted ship very late, which is hard to understand because of great visibility. Ship came from the sector of petty officer of the watch (Bootsmann Conrad).

30.XI.39 2130 at 196-004/AN34: Ship spotted, bearing 025, making drastic turn to port, range 1500 m. Small norwegian freighter. There was a big chance to be over runned by the freigter, lucky they spotted us first. Weather was good, so ship should have been spotted earlier. This was a mistake made by our petty officer of the watch (Bootsmann Conrad).

6.XII.39 1245 at 144-045/AN34: 1125 Bootsmann Conrad spotted a ship, bearing 017, 4500 m, coming closer fast. Crash dived. 1143 target designated as british small freighter, 2500 t. B315, 800 m, Ab 100R, 7 knots. 3 torpedos failed. Sonar thinks, she might be making 9 or 10 knots. Again Bootsmann Conrad failed to spot the ship in time.

SO... What is this? This man have to be blind? I could kick his arsch! This will be his last patrol with subs, or my name is not Oberleutnant zur See Stefan Rosencrantz!

Can I change the range ships will be spotted? I really would like to do it. Hate to say this, but it's enough irritating my crew can't see a smoke cloud, and that they even can't see a steamer before it gets closer than 7000 meters... Well, you know...
