What's an easy way to orient the travel direction of torpedoes to the bearing of the boat, shown in the readout at the top of the periscope view window? In other words I can't determine which way the boat is pointing in relation to the way the torpedoes launch. I know they launch either forward or aft but that's all I know. In the training courses I've missed too many targets because of this. I hope this is the right forum for this question. Thx for any help.

It depends on what boat you have. We'll go with a Type VII since that's what is used in the training. The first 4 tubes are all pointing forward, and tube 5 points backwards.
When you're looking through the periscope, the bearing indicator at top is always in relation to your boat. 0 degrees is directly in front of you, and 180 is always directly behind you. When you're firing torpedos in front of you, you probably want the target to be somewhere between 345-0, or 0-15 degrees on the bearing indicator. For rear shots, 165-195 should do the trick. You can actually fire at more extreme angles than this, but the torpedos are less likely to hit. You should also try to line your boat up so you're looking at the side of the target for the best chance of a torpedo exploding. Hope that's enough to get you started. |

Thank you very much. This helps a lot. I also discovered last night that torpedoes will bounce off their targets if they don't strike at 90 degrees (more or less). What an interesting game this is.

In situations like that (too shallow angle) you should aim below the ships keel and use magnetic pistol. See the great communitiy manual on SH3 (www.communitymanuals.com/shiii)

Also always open your tube doors before firing, otherwise there is a lag between the command to launch, and when the eels leave the tubes which will mess up your shots.

Well I'll be, the 'w' to shut doors was one I must have missed.

That q to open doors has helped me tremendously. I can say though that there is no audio cue for shutting the doors again.
