Default Star shells and AI

I don`t know if this is asked before. But do enemy ships fire star shells? Or any signal flares, when you attack them? I remember some merchants did it on SHII.

I've seen destroyers fire star shells and use a searchlight, but I haven't ever seen a merchant do either.

Only enemy warships fire starshells.

Only seen warships do it. I usually let one fly upon returning to port at night.

Usually, only destroyers will fire them. But I have seen some of the bigger cargo ships later in the war shoot a few off just after you've hit them with a torpedo.

Can you imagine my surprise as I was cruising through the night, enjoying "J'attendrai...le jour et la nuit..." as I suddenly hear BOOM somwhere to starboard, a starshell fired from a destroyer lighting the sea 2 km away from me ? I almost sh*t my pants - then I ordered a crashdive...

I had a lone C2 fire off a green star shell once. It was night time and it was taking evasive action...I think I hit it with one fish. I was chasing it submerged and then surfaced to close the range to fire. I ended being detected by its look outs and she fired a shell just as she turned away from me...10mins later a DD showed up, 5 mins later a second showed up. We were close to England, maybe in the channel in fact.

June 42, west of the channel, good sized convoy, two wounded t2's, four escorts, seemed like everyone was firing star shells......but then again I start getting nervous from 42 on!

If you use Racerboy's SH4 effects for SH3 then most ships will fire red 'distress' starshells as they're going down.
Awesome!

Any ship with the right gun mounted will fire starshells.
Not all guns have starshells assigned.

Starshells are fired:
1. Only at nite
2. When Enemy is KNOWN to be near
3. When the gun can't target them

Said guns WILL fire all starshells they have!!!
At the reload and fire rate of said gun.

They only stop fireing them if above 3 conditions are not meet.
Or they run out of starshells.
Or you CTD.
