Default Fumo 29 radar?

What use is this radar? I just installed it and am on my first patrol with it. As I understand it only works along about a 20 degree arc at the front of the boat. Will it pick up air attacks or just ships? What is the range it will pick up contacts?

Yup, it will only pickup targets directly in front or in the back of you (+/-10 degrees or 10degree radius? I have to check). There's no matter if they are airborne or waterborne - just the airplanes rarely comes directly from behind of you. I think it's range is about the same as FUMO 30 radar, just the field of vision is very narrow.
I think, that the map should show estimated range of sensors for the u-boat just as for the enemy crafts.

Most of the radars in SH3 are practically useless, since radar equipped enemies will 'see' you when you 'see' them. They're handy when tracking lone merchants in bad weather, though.

Your best friend for enemy detection is the radar detector. Normally it should detect radar signals before the enemy radar can detect you, since there is always a little loss of signals when radar signals are reflected. As soon as you get the 'Detecting radar signals!' message, dive and scan with the hydrophone. If you can't hear any ships, it's an aircraft.

I'm not sure if this superior radar detector range is working properly in standard SH3, but it's fixed in Jungman's SensorPak. I think it's improved in RUb 1.43 as well, but I'm not sure yet (still in 1940 in my RUb career).

from what i understand, the radar detector is screwed since the addition of the improved visibility mod

Do you mean in RUb? If it is, simply use Jungman's Sensorpak found here:

http://rapidshare.de/files/3448595/SensorPak.zip.html

It is mostly designed for late war tactics though, if I have understood it correctly, but if the current sensors are buggy, this would be better.

It includes the improved visibility mod, the fix for the 'death grip' the DD's have on you (they loose fix on you with active sonar when closer than 200m), radar detector fix/mod, radar fix/mod, enemy visibility fix, snorkel fix and some other things I can't remember right now. There are some very detailed readme files included and several versions, so make sure you pick the one that suits you best.

Edit: I've only tried this in late periods (1944-45), and I can assure you the radar detector works. The latest, most hi-tech version will detect enemies at 25 km. I'm not sure what the visibility mod fixes though, but in this your crew will spot ships about 10-12 km away in good weather, I think

I must admit that the main reason I tried this was to try and stay alive in 1944, as this seems impossible in the default game. With this radar detector upgrade you have a chance of evading aircraft.
