Default 3D depth rendering for subs?

For SC/DW, I was kind of curious how does the engine decide what depth to render a sub contact on the 3D (SHOW TRUTH OFF)?

For the most part, I just play with the full map view and rarely flip to view the 3D. However, sometimes I do open the 3D window just to see what a particular sub looked like.

Thanks.

Default

It renders the image at a standard depth that has nothing to do with the target's actual depth unless its on the surface (and reported by link) then its probably on the surface or was at some point or is in really shallow waters and could be a PD.
