Default Possible Way To Increase FPS In SH3!!!

I have discovered a way to increase my FPS for SH3. Here's how you might be able to do it.

Increase your screen refresh rate to the maximum that your monitor will allow(mine is 80MHz). Note: WARNING!!! Do not set your monitors refresh rate over what the manufacturer max rating is. For instance, mine is 80MHz @ 1024 by 768. Check your owners manual or do a Google search for your monitors max settings.

Now, set your screen area to 1024 by 768 and thats it. You might notice now that your FPS has increased. Hope this works for everyone.

Edit: Also make sure that you uncheck the synchronisation option in SH3 as well.

You would only notice a increase if you have VSync enabled in the game options. What Vsync does is match your FPS with the refresh settings on your monitor. So @ 80hz you would see 80 FPS.

Hmmm, I'm presently getting 85 FPS. I will have to check on that Vsync thing. Thanks.

Of course with Vsync turned off you will get better frame rates as you are not limiting the game to the monitors refresh rate. However from what I have read in tweaking guides the trade off is that you will sometimes get tearing in the textures or such without the Vsync.Which I have noticed heavily in games like FarCry and Joint Operations.

With Vsync you are syncronising the video with the monitors refresh rate giving you a limited FPS of whatever your monitors refresh rate is at.From what I have read this gives a better image quality at the cost of limited frame rates.

I personally run with Vsync turned off as I have seen no difference in image quality in SH3 with it or without it on my system. And I would prefer the higher frame rates to the limited frame rates.

Also from my experience the desktop resolution really does not have any effect on frame rates in my games that I play.So I never change it.

Ummm I dont think you could "see" the difference between 85 and say 100 FPS. The stutters will still be there.

Here's a performance booster:

Download DirectX tweaker. Then, flag the SH3 executable to only use Partial-Precision (PP) for it's shaders. Because everything will be locked down at 16bpp (or 12bpp for integers, I think), instant performance boost.

Thanks for the tip.

I downloaded it and selected the SH3 executable, but I can't find any setting referring to Partial-Precision (PP) for shaders. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Is it perhaps the one that says 'Force Shader P'?

Thanks.

Yup. That's it.

And you can force full precision, as well. This over-rides Nvidia's "optimizations", and should give you higher quality than is achievable otherwise; some Nvidia optimizations cannot be turned off in the driver control panel.

Very useful for older games that have suddenly developed a "bug" with new Nvidia drivers, due to an optimization in a new game being applied (incorrectly) to an old game. Can also fix some crashes, for the exact same reason; optimizations for one game can end up crashing out another game.

Probably won't have a tremendous impact for Radeon users, but even they benefit from the reduced precision on many Directx9/ARB2 calls.

Thanks. Haven't really had any performance issues, except when watching explosions from up close.

Also I'm a Radeon user (ATI X800 Pro), but I'll give it a try tomorrow.

Cheers,

Cool, I will give that a try. Thanks

Just got the chance to load up some sh3, tonight.

The DirectX tweaker gives an enormous boost in frame-rates, if you turn on the partial precision. Somewhere at or above 50%.

However. You will notice some pretty obvious abnormalities with the graphics. Of extreme notice is the BLUE fires that occur on ships when you hit them. It's a really vivid mixture of blues, ranging from light to fluorescent to dark.

A few other things are the very noticable depth differences on the nav map, because the shades of blue have greater contrast. Smoke and clouds aren't quite as pretty, but for a +50% boost in your frame-rates, the 5900XT and 5500 owners might appreciate it.

By turning on full precision, it might also help fix some of the graphic glitches that plague some things like sun-glare.
