Default Tragic day for U-52 at the Channel

I've just installed the first engine upgrade on my Type7b, and cruising in early morning on the surface of the Channel at 18 knots, I hear the watchman yelleing 'ship spotted'. I get to the top to check it out - and oh crap - a convoy! Smoke stacks on the horizon, a whole bunch of them.

2 T2s, 2C2s and may be 10 smaller merchants. The T2s are what I want, and they are deep inside the convoy, some 2000m beyond the out layer of C2s. It has a VW and Trawler to convoy the thing. Piece of cake, huh!?

So I shadow them on surface at full speed some 8-7km away, without the stealth detector thingies and map contact updates, etc. Only automatic thing is weapon calculations. First time too.

At some stage the destroyer picks me up when its too late to dive. Damn it. I see it firing on me, salvos landing WAAAAY too short. He's so far back it's not even funny.

What follows next is a cat/mouse game between me and the dd. I manage to close in to 3km or so - but the destroyer is pinging me. I go all silent, and move very slowly (by that time i'm at 90deg to the convoy, and making approach). The DD can't seem no notice me as it's not pinging anymore..

But than I hear a loud wham and the whole boat is shaking like crazy. The pucker rammed me when I was under water!!!! I had no scope up, had no idea where he was, and it was going like 12knts or so - not full speed. I thought I shook him off. That bastard.

My skilled repairman/navigator is dispatched to fix the damage, while my hull integrity is at 89%. That worried me.

I go ahead flank, up scope, note that the DD is right behind me and going away, and i set torpedo to 2m, fast. Back to check the damage while waiting the ship to move away enough to strike the DD. I come back and I see....

This.

It sunk. It frigging sunk, and I didn't get any credit. Arghhh!!! And it damanaged me and deprived of dignity of avenging it. But I fired anyway before I saw it sinking - so it only adds insult to the injury - I waisted a torpedo on a wreck! Not cool.

It's so shallow, it won't sink completely. Greaaat. for all the convoy to see.

So the hunt resumes, with the DD out of the way. A measely trawler is surely not worthy of a torpedo, right?

So I keep on closing in on the T2s. The bloody Trawler picked me up and is closing on me. What to do!! Dive into the middle of convoy, right under the passing C2s!! A decision I took just soon enough, as you see on pictures. Totally spontaneous, and since I got really scared when the C2s hull filled the scope, I had to use external cam to see what the heck was going on. Look for yourself.

When I came back to Periscope depth, all stressed, I noticed the trawler heading straight for me. It dumped its load and very soon I was dead. Bloody shame. Bye bye, U-52.

But it was good fun while it lasted and the difficulty setting made so much difference! Thumbs up on that and another great experience in SH3.

---------

At least I managed to send a contact report, so hopefully Luftwaffe will do something about it.

When you mentioned it being your "first time", did you mean this is your first time playing SHIII, or that it's your first time with the stealth meter turned off?

If it's your first time, damn you for knowing far more than I did at the outset! I was firing fish at the sterns of fleeing Coastal Merchants and "hiding" from DD's at periscope depth (hence, I've had the same experience in sinking a DD...except he sunk me too, that time ).

No. it's my 6th patrol in SH3 career. but first time with all other helps turned off, except the manual targeting and external cam (I like to make screenshots, but really, just that).

not noticing a DD was stupid, and embarassing, but when you got a potential 40k of tonnage in front of you, it is possible to ingnore some annoying DD.

hehe, it's not too good without the pics.

Sorry about the U-52, but I guess it was some twin-boot.

No way, I know what happened. BdU messed up with the Paperwork, some jerk painted U-52 on your boat instead of U-25
