Torpedo improvements?

While torpedoes in DW are extremely easy to hear, this does of course not apply to torpedoes in the real world, at least not in general from what I know.
The Seawolf is quite the silent bastard, I reckon (how many times has my Kilo met the bottom? Lost count.), so I was thinking, "Why don't they make the torpedoes equally silent?".

Could anyone answer that? And what is it that makes the Seawolf so quiet? Links to information would be rather splendid, too.

The level of noise made by the torpedo depends on its speed. Torpedoes are not made to be silent, they are made to move fast and kill their target.

A passive homing torpedo will be quieter then an active homing torpedo. High speed makes the acoustics useless, they must run slower and therefor quieter. Active homing torpedoes are going to make noise once they start pinging, so you might as well run them as fast as possible.

I think that for a torpedo to run fast yet silent it would have to be rather large. I am not expert, but I doubt that any torpedoes have acoustic padding and other sound lessening items incorporated. That sort of thing is used on the subs. Heh.

Am I rambling? Must be the vodka.

Another question, perhaps something to test in DW: Will a passive in DWfish at 20 knots find its target quicker than one at 30 or 40?

I think that with current weapon sonar - rather no. Passive torpedo at 20kts have no advantage over torpedo at 40kts. But passive torp at 40kts WILL detect targets better than 55kts passive (the latter is nearly deaf). Simply torpedo sonar washout is set to 60kts and starts somwhere around 50kts. For passive shots, set them to 40kts, not more than 45kts.

First, torpedoes are not made to be silent because it simply isn't tactically significant for them to be quiet. A 65 knot torpedo coming behind you from 3kyd to 6kyd yards doesn't give you much time to detect and react to the incoming threat. Your next question should be how the threat go within that range to begin with.

Second, the Seawolf is so quiet due to advancements in sound silencing technology. Submarines have inherent sources of noise and it is these sources (also known as noise offenders) that have been the focus of improved engineering since before WWII. A more specific answer will be too technical for me to provide.

A visit to your local library should reveal some decent books about the topic. I have also run across a book, see link.

Is this indicative of a new process of dyeing 'on the hoof' ?
What is responsible for that colour - is it irradiation or have Lennys flock been at the shepherds vodka ?
