Default Zero Gyro Shot Question

I'm getting pretty ok at the Dick O'Kane thing.

About it, though, are you supposed to adjust the "lead angle" so that the torpedo gyro angle is 0? The video tutorial and this say to set it to 10 or 20 depending on torpedo speed, but I never get a 0 gyro doing that. I could be missing something else. I've found I can achieve it by adjusting the lead angle, though. I've had it work both ways but wonder which is correct.

Also, for the "vector analysis" method on the linked post, step 6 can put you outside of torpedo range. How's that supposed to work? Would you use the same lead angle from step 7 regardless of range?

You don’t need a perfect 0 angle gyro shot.

As long as you are inside 3000 yards just setting an arbitrary lead angle of 10 or 20 degrees and letting the TDC figure out the gyro angle (won’t be 0 but close enough for government work) will be fine… errors in range won’t matter enough to miss.

Range matters when you’re dealing with large gyro angle shots due to to parallax (distance between scope and bow/stern). As long as your close to 0 gyro angle and not 8000 yards out, you should be fine.

*** ALSO VERY IMPORTANT ***

DO NOT use the little, red "PK" button for the position keeper when using the "O'Kane" method.

I read a while back that the thing had to be off in order to use this method.

If I'm way off on that, please let me know!

Good luck!

That’s a good point. Remember that with this method you are setting up a “snapshot” of where the ship will be in the future so long as it doesn’t change course or speed. So you don’t want the TDC tracking (red button on) because you’re predicting where the target will be then shooting once it reaches your lead angle.

Basically set up the desired lead angle you want (I prefer multiples of 10 as it’s easier to read in the periscope and TDC, and also easier to set AOB I.e. if on a perpendicular course to target, and I pick lead angle of 10 degrees, his AOB at that lead angle will be 90-10=80AOB, if I pick 20 lead angle, his AOB at that spot will be 90-20=70AOB) and enter the AOB and speed but don’t allow the TDC to track. If you allow the TDC to track then when the target passes your lead angle, the TDC will think it’s well past and overshoot.

OK, thanks!
