I've kept ahead of this TF for more than a day and the fog just will not lift. I've done manual targeting before, but never without being able to lock on and ID the target. I know it's an Ise.
![]() BTW Reshade is amazeballs. Debanding makes the fog incredibly realistic! |

Hmmm...What mod(s) are you running? Curious. Over years out of desperation I've managed successful attacks in fog...once nailing a unknown BB (believe it was Nagato) off Palawan in 1944. IF have radar can use it to get an idea. PPI scope can be a big help. The 3D TDC and Radar Range mod in TMO on the Gato/Balao/Tambor/Tench boats is great for this and long range shots. Even standard radar can be used though. Use sound to gain bearing, guess range (dont ping, will alert obviously) can send the bearing and range to TDC, activate the PK. Take estimated guess on the range/bearing and AOB. If have been shadowing should have a good idea of their speed. Can use sound mans "slow, medium, or fast" description etc to help a proper guess. Set torpedoes for shallow so hit anything. This is the sub equivalent of "spray and pray". Not sure what type of sub youre in but say have six bow tubes, then fire 2-3 at center bearing at 5-8 second intervals, then spread the rest out using the spread knob based on the length of the target. Between this, bound to get a hit or two unless way off. Those hits could slow the BB down until can make a follow up attack in better visibility. Well if want to cheat OR since sometimes, the sim gets stuck far too long in fog/foul weather cycles, can use CNTRL+N will change the weather . Make sure are out of visual range as if fog suddenly lifts and they spot you, you're gonna have a bad time (lol). "BTW Reshade is amazeballs. Debanding makes the fog incredibly realistic!" ?? |

Thanks! I forgot you could just enter info into the TDC and turn it on. Any tips on guessing the range?
I'm running most of the mods in this pack. ReShade is a graphics tool that basically allows you to layer filters over a game. I'm using Clarity, Deband, HDR, FXAA, a Tonemap and Vibrance. It's super easy to use, too, though I had to dig a little to find the clarity filter. Oh, and how do I send bearing to the TDC? Last edited by Baxder; 03-23-25 at 01:41 PM. |

Yep, that was a major advantages of US TDC was the Position Keeper (PK). Of course, it's only as good as the initial data entered. Range: Well, do you have radar? If so, can guesstimate by cycling through the range variations with the knobs. I forget but believe SJ is 3,000, 10,000, 13,000 yds so can guess based on where they appear on the scope. Another way is if you have map contacts enabled, draw a line to center of the formation from the bow (or stern) of your sub. Range does not have to be spot on, just cant be be way way off. Bearing and Speed are most important. The torpedo spread accounts for a lot of possible errors within reason. To send to TDC from sonar stack should see two clickable switch's when place cursor over it should tell it you its function. Careful not to click the "estimate range" as it will send out a ping. There should also be a "send bearing to TDC" on the orders bar at bottom of screen under the sound icon. Can also if within range have sonar operator "follow contact" by ordering via orders bar and the bearing he gives is most accurate. Problem is if more than one ship may be calling out bearings of escort or another ship. Remember as soon as send bearing, activate the PK on TDC panel. Right before you shoot, should have the periscope or TBT if on surface pointed at the firing bearing with estimated range preset into the TDC dial. When ready to fire, send that final bearing and then fire torpedoes as discussed in first post. Oh nice, I will check those tools out. ![]() |

![]() ![]() Got 'em! Well, a different one, but still. Now another question. How do I do anything with my crew? I think I began the game with "the maximum number of officers and petty officers," and even after I offloaded some I can't take any more on. Now I've been through four patrols and I can't promote anyone for the same reason. |

Well done! I love how the fog renders. I could not zoom in close enough on screenshot. Which BB did you get? Sink? Marco posted a link how to fix the arbitrary officer/PO limit. |

Bugger.
How do I get the crew to ID a target like in the O'Kane tutorial video? |

ah, ok. thank you for your patience.
if you are using manual targeting, you are expected to to either know the target's dimensions or look them up in the targeting manual. then...you are expected to make the appropriate entries to the TDC/Is-Was/Uzo machine in preparation for firing a weapon. old salts, myself included, use auto-targeting which does exactly that: when i lock onto a target, the distance, draft, etc are automatically entered into the TDC in order to fire the weapon. does that help?

I guess it's a function of TMO, which I missed the first time through. |

so, when a player uses manual targeting he must take mast measurement and length measurement and silhouette then go to the recognition guide and find his target which will confirm the measurements he took...or... provide slightly different measurements. then he has to input all of that info into the TDC for a firing solution. with autotargeting, the player locks onto the ship which is identified in the blank space above the AOB indicator. the AOB , course and speed are also displayed in that left hand panel. and the solution is automatically entered into the TDC. the player is ready to fire the weapon when the weapon is in range and the AOB is favorable. i suggest trying autotargeting for a while to get the cadence down. once you have a few missions under your belt, then you can change the options to manual targeting and do it the hard way. ![]()
