Default Tips for crew mangement

Hello, everyone I just started playing sh3 and I'm having a fun time yet the thing that makes me frustrated is crew management. Coming from Uboat I'm not used to having to micromanage the sailors I don't now how big youtubers like Wolfpack345 do it (Wolfpack345's videos are how I learn to play sh3) so I'm here asking for advice from the amazing members of subsim.

Oh also good hunting

Here's a copy of my fatigue system for SH3 Commander, it reduces the need for management while at the same time providing a reason to return to base within a reasonable historical time frame. The crew needs to be rotated a lot less, probably a couple times per game week. The EXTREME settings slow fatigue way down and are used just to have a crew that can get the boat back to base if the fatigue is too great.

;To add your own fatigue model, copy one of the existing blocks of values and paste
;at the end of this file. Update the number of this new block (the value contained
;between []) to be the last number plus 1. Then change all the values accordingly
;or add new keys as required (keys must be valid Basic.cfg keys). What you enter
;for "Desc" will be what is displayed as an option in SH3 Commander.

I have just used SH3 Commander to turn off the crew fatigue.
The crew rotating should be managed by my officers, not by Uboat Kalleun. I have more important things to do than babysit my crew all the time.

All of y'all are quite helpful using such info I was able to tweak my sh3 commander settings to my liking and developed an optimum system for reducing fatigue. First I sort the crew into 2 groups the Good ones (the ones with skills) and the bad ones ( no skills) the bad ones are what the bulk of my crew is comprised of (as I have realistic crew transfers enabled) I use them either as support for the good ones or just to man stuff while I'm cruising in the sea, but as soon as sh*t hits the fan then I bring out the good ones E.G my torpedo men, gunners and radio operators among other skills they have not been taking fatigue as they where napping during the cruise part of my voyage they make everything alot faster and easier during combat so you don't have to babysit them as much as the bad ones. Well now you now what crew to use in certain situations now you have to learn when to use em' I like to run a little schedule where every day I switch my crew I always assign shifts to my crew like the morning shift which starts at 600 hours then the afternoon shift which starts at 1200 hours and then the later afternoon shift which starts at 1800 hours (very creative name I know) and the midnight shift which starts at 000 hours. Now to make sure your crew is rested split all your bad ones into 4 groups one group for each shift and voila you have a well rested crew and are ready to kick ass (sorry for swearing). I now this may seem quite scary as I know your time is valuable and you don't want to be playing "crew sorter" all day but you will feel quite rewarded and also it wonn't take you that long like if you have 20 bad guys that means you have to only change 5 crew every six hours. Oh also if you can't get enough crew to man something e.g your engine then add just one skilled sailor and done ,also if you can try to avoid sending in your main officers as IMHO they belong in the control room and conning tower and maybe the engine room. Well that wraps p our mini chat well it's not really mini but if you can read this in all entirety then you probably have the patience to manage your sh3 crew.

I dont have that patience I guess. I have Type IX, you know - big uboat, large crew, too many people to shuffle around...

Defining the endurance of the crew as "Fatigue " in the game files is just unfortunate. A crew can only "endure" as long as there is enough food, water, spare parts, lube oil, etc. With my method it then becomes a redefinition of crew endurance from short term fatigue to long term capability. Under normal conditions, I only have to rotate the engine and watch crews every 3-4 game days to balance out their endurance levels. Crew in quarters have a very low rate of endurance loss. I still have to have crew in the torpedo rooms and repair slots when needed, which causes higher rates of endurance loss as always, then back to quarters. After a period of time, which depends on the type of boat, they wear down and I have to return to base. It's a race to see which runs out first, the crew or the torpedoes. Fuel is usually not the big issue if I watch it.

Also, I have removed the big red exclamation points from the display as they are so annoying.

yeah, fuel was no problem so far when using economic speed most of the time and with large Type IX fuel tanks.
well, the running out of the torpedoes is the patrol limit, even when saving them.

If you would like a little more detail of my crew system this is a quick description, I do things this way to keep the rank structure of the boat functioning in a more military manner.

This example is for Type VII and IX-
I group the sailors by rank, a basic core of three consisting of a "haupt", an "ober", and a regular matrosen. Bow Quarters and Bridge: The four upper slots of the bow quarters are left empty for the bridge crew when surfaced. Two groups for the watch, with one in bow quarters in the last three of the middle slots for rotation when surfaced. This corresponds to a Port and Starboard watch system. Another group for the gun crew in the first three of the middle slots. In the lower slots a group of five regular matrosen which I call the Deck Crew and are used for general tasks around the boat, mainly the forward torpedo room when reloading and emergency replacements if things go south. Next are the engine rooms, which get a basic core group plus two more regular matrosen, for a group of five in the lower 5 slots. One engine room group of five fills out the stern torpedo room when attacking and reloading. As you can see the sailors are organized into groups of five and three. That's it for the sailors; the petty officers fill out rest of the slots as needed, especially the three upper engine room slots in each compartment so nobody moves back and forth when surfacing or diving. Moving between compartments costs endurance.

If you try this method, it should become clearer how it works. Keeping the crew grouped in specific slots is good because the computer pulls crew from specific slots as needed, such as surfacing or manning the guns. Example: It always pulls crew from the first three middle slots of the bow quarters for the deck gun and/or AA guns.

As far as the Type II's and XXI are concerned, I use this system with a little more adjusting to accommodate the smaller and larger crew sizes of the boats.

Icon14 Thank You

My most humble apologizes that I waited so long to thank you I know I could have done even just a little reply but no, I guess I am to lazy to even write but thanks for the tips I like your new crew management style and it is fun to do while cruising in the high seas, it tends to keep boredom away and it is also useful. Good Hunting Herr Kaluen (also try out an Indian Ocean campaign in SH3 as they are fun and unique as almost nobody talks about them)

So what happens when a crew man or officer as the red mark on them and you send them to rest. Can they full recover their endurance.

Also is there a list which shows the equivalent ranks and ratings to the Royal Navy?

No, they don't recover, that's the point. You need to head back to base before too much of the crew's endurance is lost. I removed the red marks from displaying, as the green bar in the compartment is what you need to know. If things become difficult from too much lost endurance, then I have the separate settings called EXTREME which drastically slows the endurance loss until you get back to base. Of course, you have to exit out of the game and apply that with Commander. My rule is that EXTREME can only be used to return to base, no long chases after ships. Maybe a short attack if it comes up. The lost endurance simulates the loss of expendable supplies during the patrol.

Well, I have been using my crew fatigue system for so long I didn't take into account that maybe other players would find it difficult to mod the game out as much as I have. So anyway, I looked back into what I did to remove the red exclamation mark. I replaced the" crew_sign.tga" with a blank tga. Once again, it's great to not have those red exclamation points cluttering up my crew display!
