First of all, I offer my gratitude to the FALL OF THE RISING SUN dev team for such an awesome megamod of SHIV, BRAVO!
In the 2nd single mission of SHIV modified with FOTRS v1.8 megamod I patrolled in the northern waters of the Aleutian Islands where I encountered a small two-merchant convoy guarded by a little DE. I submerged immediately and waited ... when the prey came into my scope crosshair I shoot the fishes to both of them. BOOOOM! They were just history. Then all of a sudden the little DE came towards me as soon as she found her buddies were killed silently. Within 2500 yards or so she slowed down at 10 or 12 knots and started the search pattern. I decided to do the classic down-the-throat destroyer killer tactics to this IJN vessel. Within 1200 yards the game event window showed a fish launched from this Japanese DE and as soon as the fish touched the water it rushed toward me. And right at that moment the steam MK14 just ran outta my boat which meant there would be a mutual destruction. About Thirty seconds later the Japanese fish hit me first which caused total chaos in my boat. But we survived anyhow. The hull damaged a lot where it remained 42% integrity. And with my sailors' great efforts they saved USS Plunger. But the little Japanese DE was not that lucky which was killed by one MK14 fish. It really was an INTERESTING Aleutian skirmish for the gameplay! But, is it historicall acurate when it comes to the aspect of realworld ASW military history ? ![]()

Accurate in sense some US subs had torpedoes fired at them by surface craft and other submarines so yes. Not accurate in a sub surviving a japanese torpedo hit, especially one fired by a surface shift which would likely be the infamous "long lance" torpedo., quite powerful. Several US subs were lost to their own torpedoes and one is known to have been sunk by a Japanese submarine's torpedoes (USS Corvina) off Truk in November 1943. I know the old Plunger Class submarine USS Pollock survived a torpedo hit from it's own circle running torpedo, but only because the torpedo ran deeper than set, so it did not get the full impulse of the explosion below it. However, this was during a night surface attack and it knocked all power out for a time, while an escort was bearing down on them, alerted by the explosion. I've had close calls by submarines in SH 4 and sunk by one once, but not torpedo ships with torpedoes, yet. |
