Need help and advice please.

Im sure this has been brought up before so can someone point me in the right direction or give some advice on better tactics on approaching the Kiev carrier fleet. every single time im picked up right off the start and i just get hammered with all sorts of torpedoes and depth charges. pretty much everything they have lol. ive tried adjusting the approach distance in DOT Mod settings and to no avail. some details. my memory is terrible and i havent played in awhile. been busy. DOT mod, NATO 1984 period. thanks in advance guys.
