Just an idea I had this morning. What if there was an "observer" selectable crew position that a new player could join a ship on, which allowed someone to crew on a u-boat but not actually operate the controls on? I sometimes feel that as a new player one is not trusted by experienced players not to be an idiot and blow ballast etc at the wrong time. We've all seen instances of this. I think that this has often caused players to lock servers making it difficult for unknown players to get a foot on the ladder.
If there was this observer position, new players could watch controls being operated without causing any risk to the experienced players conduct of the boat? |

I would then suggest a training uboat
with an instructor! |

I suspect that a player who can watch, but not operate, the controls would be a far more useful tool, and require less coding than a practice boat where presumably a more experienced player or two would be required?
