Does anyone know what recruit, regular crew etc means

I was wondering what these mean in single missions in SH3 has it anything to do with difficulty, or it's just the experience and so the level of skills of my crew. Thank you sailors.

Yes this is the case, i'm discovering a whole new world, i always liked subs and after searching subsims, i decided to pick SH3.
