Default Fly the Flag

Our kitchen today

There's a slogan often used here about the quality of things, food in particular: "British and Best"

I love the way the Union Flag appears all over the packaging of stuff and wondered if it's the same in the EU countries or the US?

In Germany? Are you kidding?

The description points at the disgusted expression on the face of the Merkel-thing.

An old bitter joke, I told it before, about Merkel says that her mission is to fulfull Erich Honecker's late revenge on the BRD (FRG).

Patriotism's a fine thing and should be commended. Always buy your nation's produce. Good on you.

When grocery shopping I always try to buy Aussie made. Always search for the little kangaroo logo. The stuff's better quality too.

If I can't find any....I say "Sod it" and go to Macca's.

I have not seen the Flag of the United States on many products. Perhaps it's because we import so much and we barely make anything here anymore. Or perhaps it's because the U.S. flag code forbids it:

4 U.S. Code § 8
"(i) The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard. Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown."

I think it is probably the former, since there is no prescribed punishment for violating the flag code. However, I have seen small print on some packaging which reads "Proudly made in the U.S.A." or similar.

There was a bit of a scandal a few years back when it was pointed out that most of the Flags of the United States themselves were not made in the United States. Now it seems that at least the major manufacturers have all shifted to domestic production.

A countries flag on a product isn't the same as it is produced in that country.

Remember some years ago when it was revealed how a product many thought was made in Denmark due to the Danish flag on the package, in fact was produced in another country. Only different was the product was packed in Denmark.

Reminds me of that entire year after 9/11 that American flags appeared on absolutely EVERYTHING, including toilet paper and diapers, before we all just collectively paused and asked ourselves "is it really patriotic to wipe our a$!es with our flag?"

Nothing says I am proud of being an American then buying Chinese made magnets to put on your car.

That's very interesting; there's no such restriction here for our flag

Well TBH, practically no one knows about the flag code and you can indeed find violations of it. Especially around the 4th of July.

Also, it seems I was mistaken about the prescribed punishment - at least in Washington D.C.:

4 U.S. Code § 3

"Any person who, within the District of Columbia, in any manner, for exhibition or display, shall place or cause to be placed any word, figure, mark, picture, design, drawing, or any advertisement of any nature upon any flag, standard, colors, or ensign of the United States of America; or shall expose or cause to be exposed to public view any such flag, standard, colors, or ensign upon which shall have been printed, painted, or otherwise placed, or to which shall be attached, appended, affixed, or annexed any word, figure, mark, picture, design, or drawing, or any advertisement of any nature; or who, within the District of Columbia, shall manufacture, sell, expose for sale, or to public view, or give away or have in possession for sale, or to be given away or for use for any purpose, any article or substance being an article of merchandise, or a receptacle for merchandise or article or thing for carrying or transporting merchandise, upon which shall have been printed, painted, attached, or otherwise placed a representation of any such flag, standard, colors, or ensign, to advertise, call attention to, decorate, mark, or distinguish the article or substance on which so placed shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor and shall be punished by a fine not exceeding $100 or by imprisonment for not more than thirty days, or both, in the discretion of the court. The words “flag, standard, colors, or ensign”, as used herein, shall include any flag, standard, colors, ensign, or any picture or representation of either, or of any part or parts of either, made of any substance or represented on any substance, of any size evidently purporting to be either of said flag, standard, colors, or ensign of the United States of America or a picture or a representation of either, upon which shall be shown the colors, the stars and the stripes, in any number of either thereof, or of any part or parts of either, by which the average person seeing the same without deliberation may believe the same to represent the flag, colors, standard, or ensign of the United States of America.

Just remember

Kneeling during the National Anthem is disrespectful to the flag,
But an athlete draping the flag over their sweaty body is showing national pride.
