Naval Group Australia launches submarine ‘manufacturing packages'

Naval Group Australia has recently invited local companies to build 23 specialised parts for the boats.The launch of a series of expressions of interest (EoIs) for local companies coincided with the opening on 16 October of Naval Group Australia’s new base in Port Adelaide, South Australia.(RAN)

The new EoIs invite local firms to bid to develop and build “23 specialised submarine parts”, said Naval Group Australia, adding that the invites constitute “an almost-AUD900 million [USD637 million] boost to Australian industry”.

The EoIs were issued on the Industry Capability Network (ICN) portal, an Australian business networking facility supported by the government. Work included in the invites includes the local production of components such as steering gear systems, weapons handling systems, and main shaft line.

Naval Group Australia said the EoIs provide opportunities for local companies to become Australian Capability Partners (ACPs) and bid for subcontracts. Such work, said the company, will include the production of “Naval Group-designed critical submarine equipment and systems essential to the effective operation of the [Attack-class] programme”.

Hopefully they be an improvement on the Collins Class added to the fact they couldn't muster enough crew to compliment them.

Exactly! Have read about some problems such as combat systems, excessive noise and engine malfunctions also. The Collins class will retire in the early 2030s.

Given all the problems that have been and still are .... some have of course been fixed, the six boats that are operational would be replaced, which was intended from the beginning, but was extended in service. Money and suppliers who did not meet the requirements may be relevant reasons, but by 2030 it is said on the "paper" that the Collins class will retire. The boats began to be built in the early 1990's. The predecessor Oberon served well, though in other circumstances but was durable and reliable in more than five countries.
