The music that accompanies certain games may not always be to our liking, and we can get tired of listening to it if it is constant and without interruptions, especially in moments of tension when we must be attentive to the warnings of the submarine's crew. Unlike current action films in which the music is constant, of the epic type but without great ups and downs, so it ends up being a background noise that nobody pays attention to, the composers of soundtracks of the past used to accompany certain scenes with the appropriate score, to accentuate the suspense, the violence, the joy of triumph or the sadness of defeat. There is no doubt that Wolfgang Petersen's (1981) “Das Boot” was a milestone production in the WWII submarine film genre. The well composed music of Klaus Doldinger, accompanies the different scenes and we can enjoy them by activating any of the mods that allow us to add it to SH3. But to get out of the monotony there are other films whose soundtrack, directly or indirectly related to submarines, offers us a variant that of course must be gathered and prepared in a somewhat traditional way. I have been rehearsing something on my part, and I was replacing some original scores of the game, by some of those soundtracks, selecting the best fragments so that they have a duration of between 1 and 2 minutes. When opening SH3, "Menu_Master LOOP" is executed, and to replace it I chose the initial theme of the soundtrack composed by John Barry, from the film "ENIGMA" of the year 2000, a theme closely linked to submarines, since the suspenseful music takes place as scenes are mixed with submarines gathering to attack a convoy, while in "Bletchley Park" they race against the clock to decipher the German code. Another fragment of that soundtrack is played as "Intro_1_Master", at the beginning of each mission. From here on more the question of the music of SH3 is complicated, and it is something that I am trying to decipher, since the program chooses a musical theme that repeats itself over and over again without interruption. The Music.CFG file presents 8 states for each situation that is produced in the simulation, each one of which presents several “tracks” or musical themes .. Those states are: Begin, normal, Battle, Tension, High Tension, Victory, Defeat and Joy. After Begin the game can go directly to Battle , constantly repeating the same 2-minute sheet music, without any pause. I'm testing with the addition of additional states, for example: Battle1, Battle2, and Battle3, but only one of them has music assigned, while the other two have “Empty” files as used by the “Minimal music mixer” file from GWX. . This allows for pauses of silence, although it does not happen the same in all missions. To finish: Other soundtracks I am using are from the films: "Murphy's War" (1971), opening theme and Murphy's attack on the submarine, composed by John Barry, "The enemy below" (1957) music by Leigh Harline, scene of the submergence of the submarine, and "Under ten flags" (1960) with music by Nino Rota, which although the plot refers to a German merchant corsair, is very appropriate for the sinking of ships. For the moment of savoring victory (Joy) a sung German march seemed appropriate, perhaps by the diver or the Kriegsmarine.

Are you aware of the SH3 Grammaphone feature? It allows to play MP3 or OGG files in the folder SilentHunterIII\data\Sound\Gramophone. There should also be some download available with WW2 aged music and radio broadcasts. Iirc Jimbuna had links to them in the past.

I have the gramophone and well I use it! I have added period German music, such as the German national anthem with the lyrics of those times, the song "Erika" that soldiers used to sing a lot, and the inevitable, although perhaps controversial, "horst Wessel lied" anthem of the German National Socialist Party.

![]() I'm still studying it, and it will take time as I take notes of what SH3 does with the music, while running simple missions. I just posted this comment so you know what I'm doing, and see if anyone has already experimented on it and has any interesting ideas that add up. Of course when I have something tangible, I will share it here with all of you. Greetings! But meanwhile you can see what I have prepared so far. I have added a download link in my opening comment. Horst Wessel just seems odd historically. Especially factoring in political attitudes of the Kriegsmarine U-boot service pre and early war. Im sure late war it was mich more common for card carrying nazis in the service. I would assume most music listened to would be popular tunes in Germany, France and Britain.
As to the music of SHIII it is decent but it is not something I would ever go out of my way to listen to. I prefer the SHIV music personally. |

In my one gamer, with GWX3 installs, I have about 250 selections from the WWII era. In my 2nd gamer with a CCoM12 install, I have a mixture of European Folk Metals. At 64 I still like and prefer the hard stuff. It makes the mood for me. I do have a question for you guys ... I convert everything to OGG's, will my gramaphone play a mix of OGG's and MP3's or should I just stick with the OGG file type? I always kill the music in combat situations.
