Beside John Williams, in my opinion one of the two remaining monumental pillars of film music. So unbelievably many good scores, so voluminous a release history. A huge loss for the world of soundtracks.

Just read it in Reuters. He lived long, but the legendary music and fame almost seems to be too big for one man.
Rest in peace Mr. Morricone, we will hear and remember you! Not the "best", but a recent example:

Very sad! I loved "On Earth As It Is In Heaven" (from "The Mission" and the trailer for "A Far Off Place") ever since I was 10 years old. For years I didn't know who had composed it. He certainly made beautiful music.

A terrible loss to film music. I put him up there with Hans Zimmer.
