Default Range of shore batteries

Sneaking into a harbor at night in full darkness. At around 8km, I started receiving very accurate shore fire. Is there an automatic range this stuff kicks in at? Seems pretty far out for a night run with no moonlight.

I have had success staying about 5nm/9km away from them.. Inside that distance it's a crap shoot and appears to depend on the quality the gunners the AI assigned to the guns...

Obviously submerging to periscope depth solves the problem at the expense of speed, time and battery capacity..

I’ve found that 6 no is about maximum range in daylight. But at night I still don’t test their vision unless it is raining. And why try entering a harbor in the rain at night? Can’t see a damn thing.

6 miles is my benchmark also.
My concern has not been ports but passing through choke points: the various SW Pacific Straits.

The "range" depends upon the gun involved also. The big guns can go 12nm, if the AI Visual is set that far out (and if the gun works in a given set-up). Accuracy at that range is not "historical", shall we say... Medium guns are about 9nm, and I have been hit and severely damaged at that range ~at night~, as SpongeBob says...

Of course, YMMV... - couldn't pass that one up, sorry...
