Who do you rescue first?

You're on a boat and you see another boat engulfed in flames. When you arrive on scene you noticed five people had escaped the burning boat by jumping into the water and they are now screaming at you to come rescue them. However much to your dismay you see 10 more people still on the burning boat who are also screaming at you to come rescue them. Who do you rescue first and why?

None. They all had died when I had finished taking photos and post them to the socials.

You start rescuing the people you can rescue first and then move on to the more difficult ones to rescue.

It is better to rescue 5 people than to almost rescue 10

Have to see which ones will sign the release of liability, I don't want to get sued for anyone getting seasick on my rescue boat.

You would rescue those in the water first.

Reason being if you attempted to rescue the people on the boat first. Those in the water would most likely swim to you to get picked up. But because you are maneuvering to keep station alongside the burning boat. There is a very good chance of loosing track of those in the water and turning them into chum with your propellers.

If anyone gets burned, its their own stupid fault for not jumping in the water like the others.

What if those still on the boat are non-swimmers and there were insufficient life preservers on the boat?

Then the boat owner is in over his head.... and will get sued to death as well as arrested.

You are right, if you are close enough the others could still jump overboard, while you would already have rescued some swimming.
