SH4 Gold Pre NOOB questions

Hi everyone, first timer here (noticed I'm now a Bilge Rat!).

I'd like to take the dive into SH4 Gold V1.5 (no mods for now) and have noticed three major ways to acquire SH4G:

1) buy SH4 DVD + U-Boat Missions V1.5 expansion DVD

2) buy SH4 Gold DVD (already V1.5)

3) just download SH4 Gold (say from Amazon).

I noticed with SH4 DVD, one can get a printed manual, map/recognition posters, and a documentary DVD. Are the posters of any practical use for game play? Are there PDF versions of the map and recognition posters somewhere?

Is patch 1.4 still needed if using the 1.5 expansion?

The download of SH4 Gold from Amazon is appealing with many positive reviews. Are there any problems with Amazon download of SH4 Gold. Does the Amazon download of Gold version require an activation code of some kind and patching too?

I suggest reading all of the suggested install info here on the forum first- Important!

I selected SH4 Gold (which is v1.5) from Amazon. I DL to a portable hard drive, then ran the "setup. exe " to install to desktop below - No issues. Then I played the vanilla for some months and decided try Rallies mod soup. All working well so far.

Amazon has a D/L version of Gold. It works just fine.

I second GAP. Read ALL of the suggested install information before installing, (and then some.) There are many very good suggestions contained therein.

If you are not in too big of a hurry to get underway, I suggest you seriously consider Rockin Robins "SH4 Corruption Management System" here...

I have several different installs of SH4, vanilla and modded, and they all work!

Just a little note for that disk version you're looking at fearless1: most of them no longer have true manual in them, but have a pdf file instead, which also comes with the downloaded versions... Read the fine print where ever you purchase from...

I have both the original version and the 'Gold' version on disk. As others have said, the only real choice is between the two 'Gold' versions, with price being the only real determining factor. I'm one of the old farts who still likes having a physical copy in his sweaty hands, but if that's not a problem the Amazon version is probably your best bet.

welcom to subsim and SH4. good choice.

i believe #1 and #2 are the same but they are both good products.
i do not believe anyone sells a paper manual any longer so you are probably looking at a PDF user guide.
after you make your decision on the main product, go to the Subsim download section and d/l Large Address Aware utility and JSGME for when you decide to start modding.
also, i suggest jimimadrid's keyboard mapping utility.
