Britain's Gary Oldman was named best actor for playing Winston Churchill in World War Two epic Darkest Hour.
Not taking away anything from the other winners but this award was very widely expected and very much deserved ![]() https://www.theguardian.com/film/201...at-oscars-2018 ![]() |

Congratulations to Gary Oldman not only for his well deserved nomination and Oscar win but also for taking on the challenge of portraying the revered army officer, Prime Minister and Statesman, the indomitable Winston Churchill.

Just watched it again this afternoon and unashamedly admit to shedding a tear or two during the movie.

Gary Oldman was loooong overdue for an Oscar; there are very, very few solid, capable actor such as Oldman; I was afraid, for a bit, he would wind up like Peter O'Toole, always up for an award or deserving of nomination and always being overlooked; couldn't have happened to a more deserving artist and for a more deserving role...
