Surely - with the odds favoring at least one torpedo causing substantial collateral loss - it is not a real world tactic to put 18 torpedoes in the water?

There is always the possibility of one coming back to bite the Russians.

Which is a fun way to get kills without expending any torps. Get between 2 russians, make a ton of noise, then go deep while they shoot each other.

When I saw the thread title, I had mental visions of an SSN fired tins of meat at the enemy!!!

pretty fair mix of the flying torps launched from surface ships, helo dropped, and standard torpedoes from a sub.
by the time the sub launches four to six at you, the chopper drops one or two, and the escorts each fire their own, you're looking at potentially a dozen fish in the water in the opening minutes of the engagement. of course you go to flank, and begin maneuvering wildly, which just results in everyone above sending a second salvo of torpedoes at you once they have reloaded... I've had about 18 running me down at any given time. EDIT: i guess my question is - is that a realistic tactic? i mean i know they want me dead... but it seems that the risk of being sunk by your own torpedo is too great to be putting that many fish in the water. i cannot count the number of times i have won the stalking the red bear mission without ever firing a shot of my own.

The air dropped torpedoes shouldn't target surface ships. It is a known problem that the AI expends a bit too much ammo, and the subs don't seem to be aware of their own weapons, which is something we have to figure out how to fix.
But salvo firing ASW missiles to bracket a contact is a real tactic. |

it would also be nice to see implementation of torpedo floor and surface safety features. Im pretty sure the adcaps at least can be programmed not to target anything shallower than say 50 feet, or deeper than 900 feet so that you could go to either of these places should your own fish find you. Not sure if soviet weapons had those features or not.
I can understand the surface ships bracketing you with their flying fish. but i think IRL, the safety of doing so would be considered when they have a lot of friendly assets around.
