I experienced this in the Barents Sea. What seems to be happening is the enemy Sub is embedded in the shallow ocean floor and the torpedo tries to go the the Subs depth. So it's not a torpedo issue. I will try to get pics the next time this happens Thank You

Do you have the same problem if you manually control the torp?

I had to keep the 5 key on or it would immediately dive again. I waited until the torpedo was over the buried AI Sub and let it drop on it. The AI couldn't move because it was stuck on the bottom. Only the sail and top of the hull was visible.

A sub trying to repair is a valid target. I don't know how modern torps practice bottom detection in the real world (or if they can.) In the game 3D env, you can "see" the 3D sub and steer accordingly. In the real world, there are no cinematic cameras positioned around the battle space. The real world commander would not know what caused the torp to explode and would only know it missed or hit by resultant sensor data.

I'm just talking about a game issue not real life. The enemy sub is embedded in the bottom stuck causing the error in the torpedoes diving straight into the floor right after launch. It also causes the enemy sub unable to move

Understood. I'm just pointing out the devs are more likely to investigate a solution which mimics real life if such a thing is known and possible.

I can imagine the era that these torpedos existed in the game did not consider much in the way of littoral combat, even in real life. That is probably reserved for the last 15-20 years, so maybe the 2004 scenarios would need it. I searched google and as you can imagine the information was scare, but it looks like the late 90's is when the military started to research shallow water torpedo improvements.

Wasn't diving for the bottom a valid, if maybe dangerous, tactic for evading torps? The torp seeker would get lost in the bottom clutter and lose lock on the sub? Is this whats happening maybe, or am I just guessing at the easy answer? Is this happening with one type of torp more often then others or it's a pretty uniform action with all types of torps?

In WW2 yes it was but today imaging and other detection systems negate it.
If you're on the bottom playing a dead possum, you will become one lol

In WWII hitting a submarine with a torpedo was very difficult and rare. You would have to catch the opponent sub unaware near or on the surface. Whether the opponent could dive in time to avoid depended on how close you were and the effectiveness of the attacking spread set to various fixed depths. As we all know from WWII sims, getting a sub from slow cruise on surface to under scope depth took a quite a bit of time. By comparison, the Tang knowing a circular run was heading right for them could do nothing to avoid it.
I don't know if a real torpedo intercept against an evading sub was actually accomplished in the '80s. In our current time, doing this is all theoretical. The game can make whatever probabilities the devs want and no one can prove otherwise. -Pv- Last edited by -Pv-; 10-18-17 at 09:29 PM. |
