Just read the article on subsim's main page concerning the USS Lingm, sad situation. Makes me angry they want to cut the sub up in the name of developer's greed. I get it can't be moved. I take it the Ling has not been designated a national historic landmark? I get it does not really have a war record but something that has survived this long should not be destroyed, it's a testament to the many subs and men lost.
Has anyone here been on the Ling? |

Been on the LING three times. Twice as a kid back in the early 70's when she was painted all black and then once around 1999-2000 as a private tour from a guy I knew at the time on the 'relief crew'.
I always like the LING because she was still in her WWII configuration, which I preferred to the later GUPPY conversions of other fleet subs I visited. What I remember from the last visit was that her interior was very well maintained(even got to look through the periscope), but her exterior was in a really bad way(that was 18 years ago, I shudder to think what her condition is now). The museum was a very small affair and you could tell they were doing what they could, but without resources and no ability to get her to drydock even if they did....well there you are. Perhaps the only thing to do is strip out all the valuable stuff to give to other sub museums and break her up on site. Maybe save her conning tower as a display somewhere. I know it sounds grim, but at this point she will just rot in place until the river breaks through her hull somewhere and ruins the interior as well. If it hasn't happened already.

I toured the USS Ling probably 20 years ago. Very enjoyable experience.

Unfortunately, due to bad planning, it looks like this sub is doomed. No way to maintain her, no way to move her. The veterans have to shoulder their share of the blame for this.

Honestly, they could get the Ling out, no one wants to take the bill.

How would you go about such a task. It's in a marsh. There's no way to float a barge around it and raise it up. Even then it can't go under the bridges. It would have to fly above them. You'd need a helicopter capable of raising how many tons?
Has such a thing ever been done before for any amount of money?
