Default Freaking Osaka Harbor

Tried to sneak in after dark and apparently ran into a DD convention.

stuck on the bottom for 6+ hours making repairs and generally trying not to drown like the poor bastards back in Aft Torpedo but eventually it all came to close with a final barrage and collapsing bulkheads.

Oh well. Made it as afar as 1943 this time but still haven't finished the war.

IMHO the following is the ONLY response a skipper should send to anchorage recon requests:

"Foxtrot Uniform!"

Even if you sink what you photograph, You've still got to get to the other side of the wading pool to escape. These requests are a testament to the monumental stupidity of people who shouldn't be making decisions.

Risk a sub and 80+ sailors for a PHOTOGRAPH of an enemy vessel? Send a sub where you are CERTAIN to negate it's only means of offense or defense?

We have ultra, airplane recon and special forces in the bushes yet you want me to creep through miles of waist-deep water to take a picture? Pull the other one. Sir!

IMHO

No. They are "hollywood" missions... If you want "historical" ReCons, download Ed Howard and Company's "SpyRon Mod", which is available on another site. Just use Google to search on that name, and you'll find it. It is only compatible with stock, and can be quite a lot of fun...

As for mods here on SubSim, lurker used an "invisible Target Ship" and re-did quite a few of the Recon missions, eliminating most of the "photo ships" thingies, replacing them with "photo beach" missions, which did happen. I don't know how "accurate" he got with them, but at least you're not assigned a suicide mission every other ReCon you go on... Osaka Bay has enough issues just in RGG generated, and "overspawns", which is what you found there with that DD convention. It gets worse in there by 1944-45... It's like the whole pre-war IJN DD & DE roster is there... - that's in the "stock" game. Some mods fix it, others don't.

Although the "Guerrilla Submarines Spyron Mod" webpage says it's only been played on Stock, people have used the campaign with TMO, and if I recall correctly, also the RFB & GFO mods.

It changes the Campaign layers to Special Missions & patrols actually conducted by US subs in WW II.

In real life, US Subs only poked their noses into harbors with relatively deep and wide passages...... and, if you wait long enough in one mission you may even be able to blow up a train, just kidding.

Happy Hunting!

Cool - I've had 2 photo missions so far (on vanilla; I've only just modded up) and both went swimmingly. In both cases I made the approach in heavy fog; first time (Shizouka) it was already foggy, second (Yokohama) I bottomed the boat and waited a few days. It worked well - and after torpedoing the ships I was assigned to photo I managed to sink the Fuso on my way out.

Perhaps the OP could try giving the weather a few days to turn to his advantage? It worked well for me, though I must stress that this was vanilla only; I haven't tried it modded up yet.
