In a slip, Bill Maher reveals his racist POV

Funny! Maher is a comedian, and a famously liberal one. But he tried to be funny and oops, he revealed something about himself. What do they call that, a Freudian slip?

Mr. Maher: “Not out here. No. Adults dress up for Halloween. They don’t do that in Nebraska?”

Mr. Sasse: “It’s frowned upon. Yeah. We don’t do that quite as much.”

Mr. Maher: “I gotta get to Nebraska more.”

Mr. Sasse: “You’re welcome. We’d love to have you work in the fields with us.”

Now, I’m going to halt the transcript before Mr. Maher delivers his controversial riposte, to say that few quick-witted comedians — and certainly none who specialize in hot-button issues — would let a line like “We’d love to have you work in the fields with us” sit there, unharvested. In baseball, that is what they would call a fat pitch, one that leaves a batter almost morally obligated to swing.

The problem is that Mr. Maher swung as if the sport still had a Negro League. “Work in the fields?” he asked in a tone that was both funny and incredulous in a way, what, with certain white people right now, you’d call “woke.” He turned his nose up like someone who had just smelled curdled milk or watched Amy Schumer in “Snatched.” He could have stopped there: a kind of check-swing. His disdain was evident. But apparently he felt that moral obligation to swing: “Senator,” he said, throwing up his hands, “I’m a house nig***.” Immediately, he told the audience that he was joking. (On Saturday, he apologized. HBO called his remarks “inexcusable” and said it would edit that segment out of future broadcasts of the show.)

Actually I'm not hell bent on crying "racist!" on this kind of stupid thing but imagine if Sean Hannity had said this....

Actually I'm not hell bent on crying "racist!" on this kind of stupid thing but imagine if Sean Hannity had said this....

I think a big difference would be Hannity probably wouldn't have acknowledged the gaffe and/or apologized...

Hannity is much brighter than Maher. The slip up would never happen because it is not in Hannity(racism) from my estimation listening to Hannity and the guests/friends on the show in the past.

Media Matter link: none of the articles cited appear to be race baiting. If there are that many articles substantiating claims Hannity is racist or really is baiting the NAACP would be all over him.

I don't read this a race baiting. Hannity said any country. He picks two Obama claims he has family or a place he went to school. Not agreeing this is race baiting or racist.

"I have an offer for the president. I will charter a plane for you and your family," Hannity said on his daily radio show. "I will charter it to the country of your choice. You want to go to Canada? I'll pay for you to go to Canada. You want to go to Kenya? I'll pay for you to go to Kenya. Jakarta [in Indonesia], where you went to school back in the day, you can go back there."


Hannity added one condition: Obama "can't come back."

Race baiting and racist? Sharpeton has been told he is race baiting. Is he racist then? What is the distinction?

Haha, hey, Kenya is where his father is from, he has roots there, so it's not racist to suggest Kenya as a retirement destination. It's actually a little racist to say that sending Obama to Kenya is racist....what's wrong with Kenya?

I do think that applies across the board, however, the remark about Kenya is another birther dig at the former president. I wouldn't consider it racist in and of itself, just more kindergarten sandbox politics of the type our current president is so full of.
