Playing vanilla SH3,
if I set realism options to less, then the sound man is only useful if there is 1 contact at once. In other cases, he is quite useless, I can not get list of all contacts, plus in the tracking mode he does not say the range. There is too much playing with map and angle-tool to write this down manually. With lower realism, the black-lines of audio contacts are auto applied to map. But the problem is they are now TOO detailed. The angle is perfect, that's allright, but it is updated too often imo, and the range is too perfect too. Any way to get something realistinc in between? I want the bridge officer and sound man to for me calculate this things and marke the positions, but they are not gods either. (Maybe a mod to fix it?) The NYGM supermod takes care of this problem by modding the way hydrophone contacts are shown, its called "Assisted plotting mod". You see dashed lines to tell you in what direction the contacts are, but since they are dashed and very small, they dont tell you exactly how far away the contacts are.

It seems this "assisted plotting mod" is available as a standalone, look here:

The sonar man would never know the range. The hydrophone only gave bearing.
When you get the sonar, and the target is whithin 7.5km you will be able to get range.
