Patching

I'm getting the idea that in order to do ANYTHING with this game or in order to get any real assistance here, I need to patch up...now in order to do this there are more than a couple steps involved, the first of these involves creating back-ups of certain files, is this true?? Another important factor has become apparent to me is that the version of SH5 CAN NOT be the one that came from Steam, Also true.??? Knowing that this is the case, allow me to state that the version I have is the downloaded version available from AMAZON...how can I tell if I'm compatible?
