Resolution fix causing game to crash on startup

So upon finding that this game won't do any resolution higher than 1024x768 and knowing that my resoultion is 1280x720 I went out to install the fix need. Now after installing the fix and putting my resolution into d3d9.cfg file, the game will crash instantly with the error report citing that the d3d9.dll file is to blame. My question is, am I missing something or is there another fix I need to use to get this game running?

And will I have to install the LSH3-2015 mod for that to work as well? Because right now I'm just trying to get the vanilla game to start up in full screen

Or the better question lies in the mods folder, since I don't have one. Do I just create the folder in the SH3 folder that's in the Documents folder?

In my case, it was incorrect video driver. My laptop video card is out of support for few years already, so I downloaded the latest drivers which were granted by manufacturer as "is the only one for you from now on and don´t ask for support anymore".

Fixed the issue with resolution mods after installation.

So even with the suggested mod correctly installed, I'm crashing on start up still but now with the message of "cannot initialise 3d engine"

This is a gpu problem.
Either a driver or gpu settings.
Your Gpu settings can be found in the Control Panel Initiializing errors are usually down to the gpu.
Check that your drivers are up to date.
Run your SH3.exe and JSGME in Administrator mode.

Nvidia
The scaling mode needs to be set to > Aspect Ratio.
Perform scaling on > GPU

AMD
Image scaling > Enable GPU scaling
Maintain aspect ratio or Scale image to full panel size

I've figured out two ways I can finally play the game. I can either run it windowed (where it reverts to the 1028 x 768) or I change my desktop resolution from 1280 x 720 all the way up to 1920 x 1080

The default resolution for the LSH3-2015 Gui mods is 1920 x 1080
You can also make resolution changes in the Documents/V15/data/cfg/main cfg file under Video.
This would also apply to your SH3 folder in Documents for your vanilla game.
Ahnenerbe also has a 1920 x 1080 wide screen mod that is compatible with LSH3-2015 apart from test missions.
It needs to be disabled and replaced with the default version until the test mission is completed.

I don't have a V15 in my Doucments folder but I've tried manually putting my input into the main.cfg file found in both the Doucments/SH3 folder and the one found the games main folder with no affect

If you had followed my tutorials you would have seen that you have to have the LSH3 main mod enabled in JSGME.
You then start the game and go to the Naval Academy which then builds your V15 saved games folder in your Documents.
Save yourself some time and trouble and check out my tutorial signature.
It is important to get the installation process right otherwise you will get frustrated and lose interest.

Oh, I got it now. I usually don't have this much trouble with a game set up, but this one has been a lot different than what I'm used to dealing with
