Hello everyone. I thought i’d make an introduction since i reckon this is a very warm forum, plus i am new here. So, my name is Chris, a journalist, location is Athens and i recently started playing Silent Hunter III. It’s been almost 2 years that i had In my mind to give it a shot because i love submarines, but given it’s expected complexity i left it for later.
So now, it seems that is the right time. I have many questions regarding the various aspects of the game but before i post i always try to find already given answers. I was always into war games, rts and shooters and wwii is my favourite theme. The good old Blitzkrieg holds a special place in my heart and I never uninstall it. This seems to be the case for SH III. Browsing through this site, i’ve seen some naval games that have caught my attention and in general, i think i’d like to invest some time in this kind of games which is new for me. So, that’s it, i am looking forward to learning tricks of the game, reading news here and interacting with other skippers. Cheers to all! Last edited by foo_jam2002; 11-21-16 at 05:42 PM. |

Great Introduction Chris " foo_jam2002 " . Silent Hunter 3 is a great Sim, no doubt, especially with modifications. As far as complexity, you can adjust the realism level to match your skills and as your abilities increase, change the realism level to make it more difficult.
If you have a chance, give Silent Hunter 4 and 5 a chance as well. There are modifications available for these " Sims : as well. Enjoy your time here and welcome aboard. ![]() |

Thank you all. After i become experienced with SHIII i'd like to give a shot to 4 and 5 as commander wallace suggests. I just knew that 3 is still the best in the series and started from that.

By the way Chris, you mentioned you like SH3, like many of our Subsim members. There are a number of modifications that can be termed " mega mods " for SH3 as well.
There is the GWX, NYGM and LSH add on programs. Below is a comparison of these programs as well as the War Elite Mod from Blitzkrieg. I know that Blitzkrieg and others have put a lot of effort into this program. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=219622 Below is a comparison of these programs which is subjective in it's appraisal. The War Elite mod is not listed in the Steam evaluation . Quote: NYGM Less eye candy compared to GWX and LSH3 Tougher to evade and remain undetected by escorts than GWX and LSH3 Less ship types than LSH3, a little less than GWX Aircraft more deadly in my opinion Quicker load times Less ship traffic than LSH3, seems a little less than GWX, harder to find targets Overall less attention to eye candy and more attention to gameplay mechanics I would recommend only using NYGM after getting some what confident in your abilities to evade escorts and have had some success. Grey Wolves ( GWX ) More attention to the details in ports, including port traffic, ships, etc. The least amount of player choice for mods included in download Longest load times, has been around 3-5 minutes for me. If you like to use TC to get out to sea it takes a little longer since your crew will be spotting quite a few ships as you leave port. There is a mod included with the download to lessen port traffic. Overall a good balance between NYGM and LSH3. Living Silent Hunter 3 Even more detail regarding ports, has the most activity which includes people walking, vehicles moving, dry docks, ships traffic, etc The easiest mod in regards to remaining undetected and evading escorts. You will almost need to go out of your way to get detected. Aircraft in this mod are a small threat similar to vanilla. Includes locks for canals and ports when appropriate. The most options for graphics, difficulty and GUI included with the download. It is well suited for beginners, and the most adaptable to fit your preferences. Has the most ship types. Allows planning to be involved in historical naval operations. In the F1 menu there is a list of dates and locations of future operations as well as radio messages. Other mods will only do this via radio messages so you will not always be able to plan to take part. You also will get plenty of notice via radio messages usually during your patrol around 30 days in advance. A lot more ship traffic compared to other mods. You will have many patrols where if you attacked every small convoy and lone merchant you will be out of torpedoes before making ½ way to your patrol grid. You will not have trouble finding targets or convoys. I managed to run into 6 large convoys on one patrol. The load times are longer than NYGM but still shorter than GWX. Getting a new sub involves transferring back to the German training facility(I forget the German name) and conducting a war time sea trial. Then transferring back to your Flotilla or a new one. The good news is that new U-Boats only cost 100 renown. This mod in my opinion is great for beginners. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfil.../?id=315056037 It's important to know you can also have multiple installs of these programs so you can have them all on one computer and make your own comparisons and of course, enjoy the version of your choice. I hope these " mods " add to your enjoyment of SH3 Chris. ![]() Last edited by Commander Wallace; 11-24-16 at 05:21 AM. |

By the way Chris. I'm not sure if you knew this but the other mods you can find here in the download section of the forum are enabled or activated through JSGME which is part of the GWX program you said you already have and are enjoying.
I point this out because a new member of Subsim was confused on the differences of the " mega mod " programs being installed in the same game folder with the initial install of Silent Hunter and the other mods being enabled through JSGME. The advantages of mods enabled through JSGME is that they can be enabled and disabled at will. This allows you to try mods to see if you like them. My apologies if you already knew this and the Information was redundant. Enjoy. ![]() Last edited by Commander Wallace; 11-24-16 at 09:24 PM. |

I noticed that inside the folder named "mods" are different folders, each one representing a mod. At first i thought that they were enabled but i think now that they are not because i have the option to activate them by clicking on JSGME. They seem to offer a variety of gameplay options and i may try some of them. Thanks for the info.
