Default ALWAYS USE LEAD ANGLE WHEN FIRING ON PLANES !!!

This might be known to a lot of the SH5 gamers and sim pilots but might not be known to some newer players hence this post.

About using your Flak guns to attack planes.

Always use Lead angle when firing at planes !!!

That means, aim in front of the plane, never directly at the plane. The trick is to put the bullets/shells in the path of the plane. When you aim at the plane itself you will invariably miss bigtime because the shells will arrive where the plane just was, not where it will be.

Here are two training films for you from the war.

These might assist you in becoming a more proficient FLAK gunner.
Which does not mean you will not die or that your boat will never go down.

During WWII many U boat designers had no clue that their boats were sitting ducks and had not nearly enough ack ack of the right caliber and rate of fire to really fend off aerial attacks. The VII C-41 Atlantic came a bit closer but was also underpowered not to mention that the constant contact with salt water and air on the surface and salt water submerged was detrimental to the Anti Aircraft weaponry as well as the deck gun.

Good post, just fired [sic] SH3 up again and realized i could not hit one plane, in the training missions

So the gunsight is the direct sight, no lead angle initially pre-set, and you have to do that yourself.. still very shaky

Yes. The key is basically to spray a blanket of shells up and down and left and right of any path the attacking plane takes so it will fly into the shells.

And depending its distance and AOA (angle of attack) you need to adjust. Also keep in mind that the offset of the gunsight has some influence if the gun is not perfectly lined up.

Start practicing by shooting randomly at seagulls. Not that you can kill them in the game but they move faster and more erratic than any airplane and give you a much more difficult target to train with.

It will help you to lay a good spread/spray of shells.

A small example of two minutes ago.. This used to be an Anson.

Combined with this song........... GANGSTA !

Good luck !

If you are using your flak gun on an aircraft you are already dead. It doesn't matter how you aim. You should be submerged and not even be able to see the plane. Flak guns are just something to keep crewmen busy while they are dying. It is much simpler to point your finger at the planes and say "Bang! Bang!" And the results are the same. Fish food.

Not in 1939. Later, yes.

However. A good flak gunner can score hits.

Practice is the key though it will of course not help you in every case as I already wrote.

Diving is still the better option but not every time it works since TC settings might prevent you diving before the plane spotted you.

And then it is quite handy if you know how to shoot.

The colour illustration at post #1 is actually a bit misleading, because it apparently applies to an AA gun whose sight was adjusted taking lead angle into account, whereas the Flaks in game have not such an expedient...

Of course that is true since Ship Anti aircraft cannon worked closely with radar and at times even was steered by it.

However !

Using lead angle is very well possible when you have upgraded your deck anti aircraft gun to the type 30 which has a gunsight.

Indeed with the older type it is virtually impossible.

Have not tried it with the U-Flak yet though
