Apparently when Dönitz first read the teleprinter message "TOTAL GERMANY" intercepted from British communications (England had declared war on Germany) he "sprang to his feet and began to pace the room in agitation. 'Damnation!' he cried, 'do I have to experience this all over again?'" Then he left the room, spending a half hour alone in his study "while his staff officers were drafting the necessary orders for transmission to the U-boats at sea." Upon his return to the room, "his officers were conscious only of his energy and determination to do what was needed" (Frank, Wolfgang. The Sea Wolves. Print, 1955. pp 25.).
I don't know what I did with my life before I played Silent Hunter III, but I sure know what I'm doing with it now. I started playing literally only a few days ago (Steam says I have a mere 15 hours in-game), but I can feel the obsession setting in. I've been lurking these forums since I started playing and am thrilled to see what goes on here. Glad folks are still playing this gem of a sim. You can rest assured that at least one new person has joined your Kriegsmarine. I'm still fresh meat by all estimations, but I can manually aim a torpedo with some degree of accuracy if I've given enough time to do it; I'm slowly working my way up to 100% realism. I'm currently about to set out on my 9th patrol in my first campaign (date is 13th May, 1940). No crew or subs lost as yet, but I'm sure I'll be meeting Bernard soon enough. The Battle of Britain is on the horizon. Hoping one day to perhaps join the Doenitz Elite Flotilla once I've got a bit more experience under my belt. Until then, I'm wondering if anyone might be interested in AAR from someone who's almost totally green. I'll probably open a thread for them after my next patrol. Should be entertaining. Anyway, thought this a good a way as any to introduce myself. Wish me luck out there. - Sophist |

Welcome to the Subsim club (from a fellow newbie commander)!
I'm on my 17th mission so I know the "newness" that you are experiencing. Don't let the bad weather scare you off from attacking, you will soon learn to attack in heavy fog and launching torpedoes at 325 meters. Attacking convoys is another "trial by error" experience, it gets real busy looking at the hydrophone readings and deciphering the spider web of ship location readings. Good luck and keep us posted, Captain Coward |
