Icon7 Dog tries Swedish fermented herring for the first time

Does it smell so bad that even dogs won't eat it? The video below has been hailed by some as all the evidence you need to stop your Swedish friends nagging you about trying that infamous fermented herring.
But is it really that bad?

It is not meant to be eaten pure, and in quantities. It is used for seasoning/flavoring other food.. there's also certain cheese that is in need of habituation, so to speak..

Funny enough, Worcestershire sauce and this chinese fish sauce (squid brand) also contain fermented (=spoiled, scruffy) fish like anchovys
The romans already had basins cut out of stone, in which they threw fish rests, to let them rot in the sun and later eat it. Must have been a smelly matter..

Oh boy, that would the the "burger" of armageddon. Surströmming, Corsican maggot cheese all sprinkled with garum... It wouldn't surprise me if someone would try it though.

I ate fermented herring first time in over thirty years ago with accessories such as potatoes, onions, sour cream, bread, and 45 percent alcohol to wash down with, not so bad, and then it has well been a few times, but I guess it is as much, either ya like it or no.

Regarding eating fermented herring I remember the discussion on what you should drink to this

Some of my Swedish friends said vodka is the best to drink directly after you have eaten fermented herring and some said beer is best, while some said ordinary milk

We usually cool off after a curry or chilli hot meal with a cold lager beer, but a nurse friend told my wife just the other day that milk is the best thing for this too.

Beer is a myth and I know that for a fact, I started it.

Beer has the same effect as water, it only worsenes it because it re-activates the taste buds that went numb from the burning feeling.

Capaiscin, the molecule that ''burns'' found in chilli bonds well with fat.
So milk, butter, gravy, steak... andything with some animal fat will help.

And I'm ready to try anything (except cats or dogs) so I'm ready to try pickled fermented fish
