Default Neutral ships October 1939

I just picked up where I left off a few months ago with a patrol in October 1939 out of Wilhelmshaven. Only modification is GWX. I've had earlier incidents in this career sinking neutral ships. I remember a slew of messages outlining the fast-changing rules of engagement in the previous patrol. I thought the way they settled out, anything British is fair game going into this patrol.

Almost as soon as I hit my assigned grid, I came across a nice, juicy, blacked out Large Merchant on a night with no moon. Because of my previous problems with neutral ships, I did exterior view and went right up to the Large Merchant in the inky blackness and clearly observed a red flag with the Union Jack in the corner. Couldn't see and other markings in the red field, but it shouldn't matter in October 1939, right?

Got it towards the rear with a torpedo and it limped over the line out of my assigned patrol area. Seas were too rough to man the deck gun. It was only making 1 knot so it eventually sank within sight.

I went to save and exit some time later, and the game scored ten thousand whatever tons of NEUTRAL shipping sunk. Wtf? Is it because it was unescorted? What's the date you can start sinking British singles? ::wink wink:: ::nudge nudge:: Say no more!
