Default I am being punished by the sub sim gods!

So I am currently station at Pearl and was sent SW to the Coral Sea. Went on a patrol and couldn't locate any hostile targets. So after staying in the area for my required time.

I headed north to find something to shoot at. So I made my way toward the Bismarck Sea where I saw a few TF moving around in radio. As I made my way past the port of Rabaul I couldn't keep my curiosity in check and decided to sneak in and see what ships were in port.

One thing lead to another I got greedy and ended up in a battle between 3 DDs and a few planes. Eventually after much tricky maneuvering and well placed torps, deck gun and AA shoots the USS Drum came up as victor leaving 8 ships smoking and 3 planes downed in the harbor.

So now low on torps and fuel I decided to head home.

My issue is that the sub sim gods are punishing me "for not staying silent, nor deep" by crashing my game.

Whenever I enter a TC higher than about 256x it gets very laggy. If I encounter a new ship at all the game wants to crash.

I have done the 4gb fix as well as I don't overwrite saved games. I can load in older saves and things work fine. However, this patrol seems lost unless I want to slow boat it back to Pearl at under 256x TC.

Anyone have any suggestions on possible fixes?

What mods are you using? I had a similar issue while running RFB2.0 that I was never able to troubleshoot.

What are your machine specs? Lagginess under TC changes dramatically depending on what manner of traffic you are in. If you see significant lag it's time to ratchet back the TC a bit.

By the way, Rabaul, meet lukterran, lukterran, meet Rabaul. All that stuff said about how unrealistically easy harbors are and now hokey the game is there? Just forget all about that at Rabaul. It's always an exciting time with plenty of targets if you can get to them and aggressive escorts outside. If you're not finding anything you can for sure find trouble there!

Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing changes every time you visit.

Hambone might be onto something with a mod issue.

Hmmmm. Seems your computer is up to snuff, at least as good as mine. You have a faster processor than I have. You might try pulling OTC out of the mix, starting a new career and try a little Rabaul social call to see if it happens again. You might also make a sacrificial new career with your present setup and do the same.

CapnScurvy is also still here and as the author of OTC he might know if there's a problem with Rabaul and his mod. I'd seriously doubt that there is a problem but if there is, with all the people playing with OTC he would have heard about it by now I'll bet.

Between the three approaches maybe we can learn something. And maybe someone else who has had the problem will notice and chime in.

I had the same problem as well, came across a TF and the game would lag if I ran TC at 256x. This was with GFO, Nav Map Make Over and a few other little mods, Bearing Tool (1920x), Smaller Sea Plants/Bed Rocks and Less Plankton 1.2.

Super annoying, I stopped overwriting saves and started a new career. Been working out for me so far...Haven't ran into a TF as of yet since I started doing individual saves.
As of now I stopped running with GFO and moved onto TMO. I can't quite confirm if I have fixed my problem or not but I'm keeping tabs on it. No issue with TMO as of yet, I haven't started a career with it yet.

Edit: Now Rabaul.....Hmm I should pay a visit there with GFO, TMO & Stock and see what happens.

It's been my experience that the 4gb patch alone will not prevent lag or crash issues. I also downloaded and ran a program called Large Address Aware. Adding SH4 to that program stopped all crashes and freezes for me going back several years now. All I can say is it works for me. Good luck.

I gave LAA a try even though it does the same thing as the 4GB patch. Didn't work.

Anyways, I spent 4 hours (IRL time) slow boating back to Pearl at 256x TC and once I made it back to home port and started the next patrol things are all back to normal.

I really wish there was a MOD available that would allow you to instantly "End the Patrol" anywhere for pain in the butt issues like this.

I suspect the problem is based on number of objects that the generates and tracks during a patrol. The more stuff you encounter the (especially in regard to land and ports with lots of little things) that the game continues to stack up keeping track of everything throughout the patrol thus the reason for the laggy TC sometimes and not others.

That is all a speculation and hunch work though.
