So, I never really put much stock into alien abductions, sightings, etc. There isn't much proof, just sketchy eye witness reports, little repeatable evidence. The plural of anecdote isn't data.

The other reason I never believed is because there is no motive. Why would a highly advanced civilization come to our planet, not make official contact, slaughter a couple cows, and violate some poor redneck?

Souvenirs, that's why.

Think about it. Our moon is placed exactly in a position, where during a solar eclipse, it perfectly occludes the sun. The geometry to produce this is so very specific, that when you think about the chances of it happening, it must be extremely rare. We are probably one of the few planets in the galaxy that has a moon in such perfect position relative to it's parent star.

So we're a tourist destination. Aliens from all over sneak onto our planet to observe the phenomenon. What do we do when we're on vacation? We mess with the locals and take souvenirs.

It starts to add some plausibility to random Alien sightings.

(Written some what tongue in cheek, but it still makes you stop and think for a sec)
