Default Are there any submarine games on the horizon?

As someone who has not kept track about the development of submarine games at all, and only recently has re-entered the genre (only to discover that pretty much everyone still plays either Silent Hunter or Dangerous Waters), I wanted to ask what can I expect in the future.

Are there any upcoming submarine games at all?

Are there any submarine games planned?

Are there any rumours about submarine games?

Thanks in advance!

The only thing we have that's recent is the Kraken in Grand Theft Auto 5. I think we're a strange lot that the game companies don't understand at all. Then we're a small market compared to the millions of copies of Borderlands 2 that they can ship out to worshipping hoardes who think realism is how realistic heads explode when you pop 'em with a sniper rifle.

And mind you, they've never seen what happens when you shoot someone in the head with a sniper rifle, so they don't really care about realism. To them realism is how bodacious the splat is and how colorful. If the victim can utter a timeless phrase like "I miss my midget!" as he slumps to the ground that's a bonus. How he talks with no head is no concern of the gamers.

So on one side of the equation you have a few very critical experts who play sub simulations. On the other side you have millions of non-questioning people who happly plunk down their $60.00 and ask for more gore.

Microsoft abandoned the Flight Simulator. Ubi thinks sub simulation should be a poorly done Sims game where our primary concern is the quality of the cook's soup. What's the future of submarine simulation in your estimation?

With regards to realism, nothing in gaming can match that feeling you get when you hear that haunting sound of bulkheads going echoing through the water to you as a ship you put a few torps into heads to a watery grave. It really drives home what you just did and has more of a lasting effect on me than any FPS game could ever have...

Actually we have several. You can find them right here on the forums. WOTA is making progress and has a dedicated developer, even if it's a one-man project: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/forumdisplay.php?f=264

The developers of Pacific/Atlantic Fleet, while not sub games per se, have mentioned that they're making a real-time naval title next.

Crash Dive has recently released a PC version: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/forumdisplay.php?f=270

You'll find a few other indie projects here in the forums as well. Major publishers have no sub sim titles in the works - but then major publishers have basically given up on any simulation titles. Luckily, indie developers are already starting to come back to fill that gap.

Flight sims are also hardly dead - Microsoft got rid of the title, but the license was recently picked up by Dovetail games who've re-released it for Steam, and have recently announced that they're working on their own new title. There is also another branch of the same flight sim engine that was picked up by Lockheed Martin and developed into Prepar3D - which is "not an entertainment title" as they keep stating, but you can still buy a developer copy for a reasonable price.

Thanks that actually looks better than expected. And hey, indie games can be awesome too. And everyone thought space-sims were dead. And then Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous came along. And shortly after that AAA developers jumped back on the train, with that Unknown Horizons game or whats it called.
