Default Subs and Enemy ASW FF Question

G'day guys,

Just a quick question - how do you, in a sub, deal with Enemy ASW surface units?

I ran a test, in a Flt I LA SSN, against a Jiangwei II frigate. He ran a barrier back and forth and I was sitting on the bottom at 0 knots, right under him (in 200 ft of water).

He ran over me a couple of times; I wasn't detected - but when he was right over me again, I came to 150 ft and 2 knots to follow him, I was detected straight away (I was using scripts to let me know).

Question is, what are your tips for dealing with ASW frigates? Do you keep your distance - even on EMCON?

How can you get past a FF "barrier" to do other sneaky stuff? Also, what's the safest range against a FF who is using active sonar?

Cheers guys,
Stew

P.S. - I'm using RA Mod

Sprinting is the way. General rules of sonar avoidance apply, staying behind the ship is a good way to avoid short range sonar.

I don't think the Jiangwei II has a tail, so if you're behind the ship they should not be able to pick you up on sonar.

I am not sure how DW models the baffles with regard to vertical position, so if you started to move too soon (i.e. directly under the hull of the frigate) maybe you were still in the sonar cone.

To me, the best defense against ASW ships is distance. You should be able to detect them from further away than they can detect you (unless they are stationary or something), so with some planning you can typically manage the encounter. Sometimes the best choice is to go way out around the escorts rather than try to sneak close by them.

All that being said, if you're playing Stock DW, the sonar model has some serious quirks, including hard cutoffs for detection that sometimes seem jarring when you play and leading to instant detection. I believe the various MODS (RA and LWAMI at least) have adjusted the sonar performance to make detection more gradual.
