Default I want a modern subsim with a nice campaign - Sub Command or Dangerous Waters?

I heard Dangerous Waters has better graphics and more vehicles, but a worse campaign. Also the subs supposedly dont have as much functions as in Sub Command. Is that true?
I really love cold war sub-action, so I dont want to miss out on that.

Also, are there any modern subsims on the horizon?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Rudeljaeger, it depends on what type of campaign you're looking for. Yes DW has better graphics as it is not as old, but the campaign is mostly operations in littoral waters in a later time period, however there are multiple platforms to command, not just subs. In SC, operations are far more like the cold war, where avoiding detection is the name of the game rather than use of weapons. In a lot of the campaign missions, the ROE prohibit firing on enemy contacts in SC.

To be honest, I have both these sims and I like them both. They're very reasonably priced now so why not give them both a try?

I haven't got the faintest idea why someone would think or claim that. The subs in DW and SC operate about the same infunctionality. Infact, the subs in DW have Stinger missile airdefence on the conningtower when surfaced. In SC you do not have that. DW subs in comparison to SC subs are not lacking. Except for maybe hardcapped sensor ranges at 10 NM. But there are mods to solve that.

Thanks for the replies so far. To clarify: I would like a nice long campaign, maybe even with a decent Tom-Clancy-like story around it. I heard that Sub Command comes closer to that, while Dangerous Waters has shorter campaigns that focus more on "play these missions multiple times with all vehicles from all viewpoints".

And I really want to focus on subs. If Dangerous Waters has indeed just as good a campaign as Sub Command, than I will try out this one. The better graphics are indeed tempting But yeah, otherwise my rule is: Story / Immersion before graphics

EDIT: I bought both. Still thankfull for details about the campaign, though! http://i.imgur.com/Sb3hDxQ.jpg

Well, whichever one you choose, don't forget this goldmine of community scenarios/campaigns. Especially Bill Nichols' own Sicilian Wedding. A single mission file, but with as many parts as a full campaign.

Funny you should say that, you can download a Red Storm Rising Campaign for Dangerous Waters based on the Tom Clancy novel!!

Get it from here:- http://www.subguru.com/dwmissions.htm

Enjoy

IMHO you should get Dangerous Waters and install the Reinforce Alert Mod (DWX).
It not only will add more units but realism is improved too, you will have advanced fire control options (like programming torpedo to attack ships or subs only, search pattern settings and so on) . Also the Reinforce Alert mod comes with the Sub Command campaign and Missions, 688(i) missions, and the Red Storm Raised campaign all readily converted for DWX use.

the RA-Mod you can get here: http://ra-dwx.narod.ru/download.htm
don't forget the database fix.
I recommend to install the russian voices too, it add very much to the atmosphere.

Also you can try to find a a copy of Sierra's FAST ATTACK at ebay, it is a bit outdated (1996), but some things are better done than in sub command or DW, it have 5 campaigns ranging from littoral combat to wwIII like scenarios. Its campaigns are very well done, however that game have some little bugs but it is still enjoyable. It is a DOS Game but runs perfectly with Dosbox
