It all depends on which theatre of operations you are interested in. If you want Pacific ops then SH4 is your baby. It's a bit more difficult if you want to do U-Boats though. If you want the best SH experience around but can put up with the slightly dated graphics, then SH3 is without a doubt the best one, however if you want a more up to date version, SH5 is the way to go but ONLY with a good mod set (e.g. The Wolves of Steel mega mod is a very accomplished modpack).

SH3 would be my recommendation, followed by 5, then 4 (must have add-ons). But that's just me, all are reasonably cheap now, get 3, save a few dollars more and get another. At the end of the day only you can tell which you prefer.

If you can get past the dated graphics, SH3 is the best of the bunch- for me it's one of the greatest games of all time.
With the GWX megamod, I had an absolute blast, starting in a II and ending in an XXI, having visited every theater (and then some). I never really got into SH4. SH5 - It's beautiful, and it has potential, but it's limited to just VIIs, and for me the difficulty of trying to get the SH3/GWX experience with it was just too taxing, due to design decisions (e.g. they threw out the great, stock Kriegsmarine map from SH3, and replaced it with....something that wasn't that, for some reason. It didn't even include the KM grids, and I had a devil of a time trying to find a compatible mod to fix something so simple). If you get a physical copy of SH3, make sure it's free of Starforce. |

It obviously depends on your theater preference, but I found SH4 to be far more engaging than SH3. I did enjoy SH3, but the U-Boats have never stuck the same emotional chord as the fleet boats do with me. They're also faster and have more torpedo tubes and damnit I like that.
Neither game ever gave me much technical trouble, so I don't have anything to add there. Approaching them in a neutral fashion, I'd still suggest SH4 as the better option, due to the breadth of the Pacific Theater and the wider variety of submarines to captain.

I agree with adrians69; it really depends on which campaign you prefer, Atlantic or Pacific. |

I would vote 4 with addon.
IMO SH4 with the UBoat addon offers the best compromise between playability and eye candy. And of all the SH series is the one with most diversity allowing you to play both american and german sides and both Pacific and Atlantic theaters.

I agree with Angus on SH3 with GWX. With SH3 there is also the living silent hunter mod as well as many others, but everyone has their preferences as far as the Silent Hunter series. Check out Amazon. you may find you can afford a few more.
