Default GWX 3.0 GW Officer AWOL bug

I return from a glorious mission racking up a couple of successful convoy attacks, some good deck gunning and a few close encounters due to sleeping watchmen and one of my officers decides to go completely AWOL between returning to port and launching the next sortie.

Is he asleep under a table in the pub? Enjoying certain houses of ill-repute in St Nazaire? Gone home to the birth of his twins?

No-one knows.

The rooster tallys him as the 5th officer out of 5, but the officer icon is blank. I cannot dismiss him, I cannot replace him, I try clicking on all the blank officer icons to see if he is hiding, but he has simply vanished forcing me to set sail with only 4 active officers out of my compliment of 5.

I return to port with my sub held together with duct-tape & shoe laces and my one remaining diesel held together with the contents of a dismembered torpedo in the hope he may be waiting for me on the dock to help lending a hand with the repairs following a suicidal convoy attack off Islay on the Scottish West Coast - he is after all my qualified repairman! Nope, still AWOL.

Has anyone else come across the 'disappearing and not being able to replace an officer bug'?

Help appreciated as my campaign is getting quite difficult without him!

Yes, it happens once in a while. It seems to occur when he is left in charge of the damage control team when you end your patrol. Somehow this doesn't get processed correctly for the next patrol. I don't know of a correct way of fixing this issue. Somebody else may respond with more info on this.

Something similar happened to me once.
I earned the type XXI and played out the war to the end, and then started my career again from when I first unlocked the XXI (like the last 8 missions or so), and suddenly, 3 of my torpedo trained loaders disappeared...
Each of them had the 'german cross in gold', which removes fatigue, so I left all 3 on duty in the forward compartment (not in quarters to rest, since they don't need it), and when I started again, they were gone. Like they'd never been on the boat in the first place. Ever since, I try to group all my crew together when they are not needed at battle stations before I return to port and quit the mission.

I remember reading about this here before. You can fix it using SH3 Commander, but I don't remember the details of how to do it.

The upshot is he is still there, just invisible.
