Default Torpedos how some other ship? grey sunk ship?

I am in rough weather, and all of a sudden I am in the middle if a convoy !

I shoot one torpedo at a large merchant ahead of me, but it is not sinking.

I fire one behind at something, don't know if it hit or not. But forward a couple minutes:

A militsry ship is straight ahead looking for me, and I fire 4 torpedos and it, but it was too close, they all went ahead of him. I was not turned well enough

Fast forward a bit,

Torpedo impact
Torpedo impact
Torpedo impact
Torpedo impact
She is going down!

Huh? I missed what I was shooting at but did they hit someone else? I look at the map, and there is a GRAY sunk ship icon. Usually it is red. Why is it gray ?

Was it neutral? I am using grey wolf mod so I can't see if things are hostile or anything on he map by color.

It defiantly didn't hit the military ship, he was like 300 meters ahead of me they exploded quite awhile after. And it is chasing me for awhile, it is some kind of devil ship. It has depth charges to drop, but it seems to be Shooting the, perpendicular to its course as well! What the heck is happening!

You could miss a ship in rough weather. It happens sometimes.

I missed I for sure, but did it really hit a different ship farther away?

I am confused mainly because the ship reck icon is grey instead of red, which is the color of all the other ships I sunk

For now I am assuming that my missed torpedos hit something else as it went, but why is it gray? I'm scared I hit a neutral now, and my renown will be gone!

Don't quote me on this, but my understanding is that a grey sunk ship icon appears when you sink a ship but your crew did not actually see it go down.

Sometimes in the heat of the moment it is impossible to confirm a sinking. Think of a grey shipsunk icon as "sinking probable" which was something real commanders had to deal with.

Ahh that would make sense

Anyway, I survived. I got back to base and it says that I sunk a Great Lakes freighter. .. Yay.....

After being hounded I went east, and immedia toy found another cinvoy. I sank a large merchant ship , with 8 tanks on the deck.

But now at home, I got no credit. How depressing. I have heard people complaining about rough weather making some ships sometimes not count when sunk, guess this is an example. Even though it was the one I felt most proud sinking

I had a good laugh reading thread

Yeah I had same problems in bad weather and fog. if you hit undentified target or crew is not able to see sinking then it is listed as a normal sinking or it is not even listed and you won't get any points. very frustrating sometimes when you miss like 10k tons

Ok I am back and furious

I hit two empire freighters with 3 torpedos each. They go below the water, at a 90 degree angle from their upright position. about 10% of them are still above water.

What do i see when I report my patrol? no ships sunk

And what is worse, a submarine "spots" them there. As if they are still moving. I can click on the icon on the map, says thehy are going "slow". I go back over there, and they are still in the same exact position.

I fired my last two torpedos at one of them in anger, hoping it would cause the ship to split or something and give me credit. They explode but nothing happens.

I try to take a screenshot, to post here in anger. but it just took one of my desktop. How do I take a screenshot in this game please, i tried prntscreen then past to paint but it was of the desktop

I want to fire my deck gun at it now, hoping it will explode that way. But the water is too rough.

I dont want to play now, too angry , this is after a crash too. Maybe it is just me staying up too late.

if anyone can tell me if there is anyway for these things to count, please let me know. should i really wait for better weather to shoot them with my deck gun. can anyone help me take a screenshot to show it better

How do you have your game set up? Mods? The major mods do change the damage statistics to make sinking more caused by flooding, and less due to destruction of deck-mounted parts. So feel free to shoot the deck gun, but it is better aimed below the water line, instead of stuff on deck. Also you need patience for the water to flow inside.

That said, if the sea bottom is shallow, it may be resting on it so it will never go below the waves. Though luck now.

Hello, I am using Gray Wold Mod, and latest patch. And SH3 Commander, that is all

It is fairly shallow waters. When they sunk, one side of them went downward, and it sort of just sat there at a 20 degree angle or so after it hit touched the sea floor. About 10% of the ship was above water. I shot two torpedos after waiting a day for it to move, but all it did was add black spots. Didnt budge the ship.

I left, and came back a few days later when the weather cleared up. They were there again, but in an upright position sitting on the sea floor. Only thing showing above water is the top of 40% of the masts. Funny thing is they keep being reported by radio that they are there, moving FAST.

I think it was just too shallow of water and they didnt give me credit or something. I am just never going to sink ships on the east side of UK again I guess

BTW, can anyone help me figure out how to screenshot properly? When I did PrtScn button it only showed my desktop

That explains it then. They didn't sink fully. It is still resting on the sea bed. Shooting more at it won't help one bit.

Ctrl-F11 should make a screen shot. Print Scrn doesn't work for the game. It should end up in the folder where the game is installed.

I'm trying to close on an Allied convoy. It's dark and lousy weather. I have them on SONAR, but no visual contact. Suddenly, one of the Allied ships sinks! I didn't fire on it. It showed a gray icon.

I can only speculate it went down because of the rough seas or there's another U-boat out there.

Other AI (Uboats) cannot fire torpedoes, so that is out of the question. Though the AI can use the deckgun so potentially it may be so. But it is indeed more common that ships sink due to bad weather/wave action.
